High Idle

Just curious about this....

When I start my sled cold (fully choked) it fires rite up in no more that three pulls once it warms up and I turn the choke all the way off my idle shoots up to over 3000 rpm. This happens when I have the rear of th sled supported and the track off the ground. At this point the clutches actually engage and the track obviously starts to spin and the idle will climb up to about 3500 if I dont grab the brake. If the sled is not supported and sitting on the ground the idle will stay at about 2500 rpm (thankfully the clutches dont engage at this point and the sled sits still).

I just got this sled running a few months ago and I'm not sure if this is something that will "calm down" once the sled is riden for a few minutes (this happens on some of my buddies sleds). As of now I havent actually ridden this one more than a few small laps in my yard.

Is there something I should be looking into...trying...fixing...adjusting....

As always any help/advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

most likely 1 of 3 problems:
1) dirty carbs
2) incorrectly adjusted throttle cable (not enough play)
3) incorrectly adjusted idle screw

if you have not cleaned the carbs this year start there (needs to be done anyway)
in doing this you must disconnect the throttle cable (thus making the adjustment correct upon reinstallation)
then if it still idles high, turn the idle down.

Sounds lean on the pilot circuit to me. Like maybe the air/fuel screw isn't turned out far enough or the pilots are partially blocked.

Same question as the others, have the carbs been cleaned yet?
If it's the air/fuel screw, it should have a slight bog when you mash the throttle from a dead stop(lean spot). You will have to test this under load, doubt it would work when on a stand. If the carbs haven't been cleaned yet, do that first. Check the screw while you have them out. I think SRX is different then my Viper. I'm running my Viper at 2 turns out, I think the SRX is 1-1/2 turns out. Verify where the SRX is suppose to be, either with search function or someone else may pipe up with the setting. Or, I'm sure its in the tech section.

Nope I honestly havent touched the carbs yet. I was kinda hopein since that this sled only has 1100 miles on it I might be able to get away without playin with them. I'll see if I can get out there and play around with 'em this weekend and let you know how it works out. The power valves on the other hand, I know I still need to clean those... would that have anything to do with this??

Thanks Guys....

try your cable adjustment. When I started mine up this fall,it started up good and began to run fast idle.If you try and back off the idle screw and the idle is still high...slacken off the cable. That's what I had to do and it runs normal again.

deviant, i would clean out those pilot jets and set the fuel screws at 1-1/4 turns out. yamaha's spec is 1-1/8 turns out, but i like the 1-1/4 better. also, just double check the idle screw and cable tension like others have mentioned. also, get those power valves cleaned/adjusted!....lol.

Cool, I'll give it a shot. Thanks

Clean the power valves, and adjust.... Most likley as others already said air/fule screw adjust or slack in the throttle cable..... I read some of your other posts.. about redooing your sled... Great work I must say, but even at such low miles if gas has set in the carbs for even a few months it starts to degrade and varnish begins to clog stuff up... I would clean them just to be sureof what you have. Nothing worse than going out for your first ride and burning something up. If you ever come over to the west side of the state pm me if you want to ride...

Thanks for all the advice guys. As always, its greatly appreciated. Its dosent look like I'll be getting to it this weekend but hopefull I'll be able to get to it during the next few weeks between lookin for a nice rack to mount on my wall lol.

DV8 - Its too bad I didnt have this sled a few years ago - I just moved out of Mecosta Co. in June.... just a lil north of you if my memory serves me rite. I got my hands on a friends spare sled and we did some pretty decent ridin between Mecosta & Newago Co's a couple of times last year. I'm hoping to make it over there at least once this winter to ride with some old buddies from that side of the state. I'll hafta hit you up when I'm headin that way.

Ok, its been a while since this one was on top but here it is again.

Since the last entry:

Cleaned carbs
Cleaned and adjusted powervalves
Ran new gas and oil thru her
Ran great for the first weekend, idled rite and everything

Last weekend.....
High idle came back. :o| The sled still runs awesome when I'm on it but now the idle wont drop below about 18-1900. The only thing that I know changed between then and now is the gas and oil (93 pump gas and Yamilube). Should I just play with the idle screw or could this be a sign of something else? I just wanted to check with you guys before I start playin with stuff.

Just a side note - This thing is a pain in the @$$ to start cold in the morning, once its warm it starts 1st or 2nd pull for the rest of the day..... related maybe??? :dunno:

Stock idle rpm is 1800?

On the hard to start, maybe something going on with the choke? Like maybe one or more of the passages is still blocked in the carbs?

Is the stock idle really that high? Mine usually bounces around the 2K mark, mostly below once it settles down. The first weekend I got out it was idling at about a grand tho and that seemed alot calmer. I'm just goin by the other sleds I ride with (none yamis tho) most of them idle under a grand, usually around 850ish. Mine just seemed high compared to them.
