How do you get the dipstick out of the chain case the exhaust seems to be in the way? any thoughts

remove the exhaust, otherwise you'll bend the stick trying to get it out and then when you do get it back in, it'll rub on the bottom gear.... making a very BIG mess...

Good to know, I read on here something about packing the exhaust.. any suggestions on where to start pulling the exhaust out?

On a V-max 500 you can't repack the exhaust, what TJ500 is saying, is to remove the whole exhaust system. Start by removing all exhaust springs, than remove exhaust pipe, and if you have to, remove the exhaust muffler.

All that for just checking the chain case oil? (why bother putting in a dipstick) SO just to confirm; there is no other way than to take the exhaust apart?
Also;
If I opt not to take the dipstick out and rather just change the oil and check the chain can I avoid taking the exhaust out, or is that recommended for inspection?

ALso if I take the chain case off, when I put it back together do I have torque them down to and specified ft.lbs. or do i just tighten them to be realitivly snug?

take the muffler off and you will have easy access to the dipstick and the chain case, also, there is a drain plug inside the tunnel.
Also if I remember right the torque setting for those is 7.5 ft lbs.

It takes 30 seconds to remove the can and the exhaust pipe... another 45 seconds to put it back... use a good pair of vice grips on the springs....
