ok i have a problem ..i need to know how tight the track should be ....is there a measurement from bottom of slides to the track for the adjustment ?? i have a 99 sx and the rear of the sled is loose ....when riding it i can hardly keep controll of it ...cause it goes side to side a few inches like dog walking ....is it the track adjustment ? skis need shimed ? or limiter straps ...it is all stock with under 1000 miles on it ...w arm is not cracked ...what would be the best way to try to correct this problem ?

It may be a traction problem.... But to your first question, Yamah recomends I think its 20 or 22 lbs of weight pull on the track with 1/2 inchplay between the track and the slides. I use 2 10 lb weight in the center of my track then tighten until i have 1 in of play on each side. You then have to rotate you track a few turns to make sure you have even adjustment....measure lug to side of slide clearance so you have equal amount on each side. adjust accordingly. Or your rear suspension isnot setup correctly for your weight... Not enough weight on the skiis, so when the track spins it you really have no control..
There is several threads on rear suspension setup here.....
BETHEVIPER is really knowledgable also. he may be able to help you with more detail..

It sounds like there is no down pressure on the front of track.Causeing it to spin for traction. The limiters are pulled right up or the front shock is pooched.Lift the sled up at the rear and set the front of the track on a block of wood or something. If the front of the suspention colapses easy i would think it is the shock.

ya i have looked at other sled and the back 12 inches or so of the track are off the ground about 3/4 of a inch ...and the sx is flat on ground at the back...i think this is my problem ...so if i loosen the limiter straps it should let the front of the skid down and raise the back ? .i have read about shims for the skis will this help my problem ? what do i use for a shim and do i shim the front of the ski or the back ? i have a stock track when i measure the gap i shouldnt measure the height of lug with it should i? or measure from the low spot on track to the slide? and 1 inch gap is what i am shooting for ...

Is the rear of your track off the ground just sitting in the garage? Meaning the front of the rear suspension touches but the back doesn't? If this is the case, the straps are out too far, you need to shorten them. The shim deal is more of a darting fix, so be sure of whats actually happening.

As far as track adjustment goes, alot of people will advise you that the yamaha specs are way too tight. I've read on here more than once to loosen until it starts to ratchet, then tighten it up again until the ratcheting stops. Right now my track has about a 2" free hanging gap (no weight applied just gravity) between the top of the track clips and the slides. It sounds like you might have other issues going on, but it's something to keep in mind if you do mess with the track tension.

x2

I don't think the tension is an issue, it sounds like the skid is "loose" causing it to slide around usualy from too much ski pressure and not enough on the track. As was mentioned above it could be the front shock. Check the limiter straps on the front and see if they are pulled up or down all the way.

the sled feels real loose in the rear and darts side to side when riding it ..................................compared to my other sled the skid in this one sits flatter to the ground ...should i try to get the back of the skid up in the air so more weight is on front of skid ? how do i shim the skis cause it does dart side to side really bad weather you are hard on the gas or just barley giving it gas so i dont think it is a traction issue ..i belive its a skid adjustment or skis ....skis are the stock skis ....

the skid on my other sled sits off the ground at the back just a bit ...i have measures from rear axle to the ground on both sleds and the one i am having problems with sits lower or flater to the ground ....but yes it is a darting issue 60 mph and it will get away from you and kick sideways and send you sailing ..

As others have said about the limiter strap and ensure the rear pivoting portion of your skid is working freely and not binding. If your running the stock skid check the transfer rods. Also inspect the front-rear skid shock/linkage to make sure it isn't siezed or spring wound too tight. Also have you checked your front end for proper ski alignment? :2strokes:
