I tried getting my Viper started yesterday, but ran into a problem when it would idle. It would fire up, but wouldn't keep running for very long. I'd have to toggle the choke from full to half to keep it running and if I used the throttle at all it would bog and quit. Is it just the old gas that's left in the tank? Problem with the carbs? Or am I just missing something? First sled so I'm quite the newb.

Thanks

usually if the sled is not properly summerized or things just happen the carbs just need cleaned. I summerize mine till the next season then I will put freash gas, check the plugs, grease, check everything out, and clean the carbs. You would not believe how things can change over summer.

carbs carbs carbs... i would have to say clean the carbs... i clean mine ever season, i have heard of some not and getting a way with it but i mist one season with the wifes sled and lost a cylinder because of a lean out.... i just thought oh its just her sled no biggie.... oops

Clean the carbs & p.valves...easy to do & cheaper then a engine rebuild...also remove the exhaust blow it out (never know if a critter had a home in it)...You would never take your car on a long trip without going over it & maybe a tune up...
Look in the tech section-carb cleaning 101...easy to fallow, run into any snags, just ask...

(ITS THE CARBS) My SRX 700 did the same thing when i started it for the first time this year, I opened the carbs and wow the pilots were plugged solid so i cleaned them and now she runs like new.

One other thing not mentioned... when I bought my Viper I wasn't aware of the start up procedure... I used to just put the choke to full and start up my old Phazer and as soon as it started I'd remove all choke. On the Viper you need full choke to start, and then once started, put it to half choke for a few minutues, then take the choke fully off and it'll stay running.
I know this is the obvious, but if you're new to the Viper, that's the start up procedure.

Carbs are not easy to do your first time, your either stuck paying a dealer to clean them for 300 bucks or finding out the hard way why and do it your self, i don't want to spend that kind of money at a dealer so i do all of that crap my self... what a pain....

My buddies sled would not start at all this fall, broke the pull rope after 100+ pulls.... pulled the carbs off, everything is clean and wasnt dirty, fuel pump is doing what its supposed to and there are new plugs.... Used the Air hose in the tank to pressurize the the system to get gas into em but still nothing, this is turning out to be a complete bitch....

Did you pour some gas down the cylinders? I couldn't get my Viper started last year as I ran it dry at the end of the season. Pulled and pulled and pulled for a day...
Did the tank pressurize as well.
Poured gas in the jugs about 4 separate time and on the last one, it stayed started.

100 pulls? my goodness...after 10 i know something isnt right! like others have mentioned a tsp of gas down each cylinder ( i use a squeeze bottle from contact solution) works great.....do this AFTER cleaning the carbs. this helps "prime" the carbs because they will be empty after cleaning. ususally 1st or 2nd pull it will start then die.....pull plugs and add a touch more fuel....then start and should stay running, if not one more drop down each cyl and you should be golden....

Yep, that's what I do at the beginning of every season-- some mixed fuel in a mustard bottle down the plug holes-- 1st or 2nd pull-- saves a lot of pulling!
