I have a 97 XTC 600 twin that started using a TON of oil end of last season. Since it is the sled we let the newbies ride we just put it away and forgot about it. From what I understand it is probably the oil pump. My question is how hard is it to replace and exactly where is it located?

Thanks

Our 97 venture 600 twin, same sled as yours really, uses a lot of oil as well. It IS the oil pump.

How hard, well, it does not appear bad at all. Because of where it is, it actually looks quite easy. It is on the end of the motor on the pipe side. Follow the cables, and you will find it. Most sleds have the pump under the carb area, not so on this motor. Apparently the yami dealer up by our cottage is replacing it free under recall warranty. The pump itself is ~140 dollars, but it seems easy enough to replace. If they actually do it, I will not stop them, merely for the price of the part. We will take it in next week and see if they do as they say. Otherwise I will replace it myself.

it's very easy, once you have it bolted on crack the bleeder screw on top until oil comes out then close it. It still may take a little bit to prime, a few friends of mine mixed a little oil in the gas tank just as an extra precaution but mine started blowing smoke almost immediately after I started it.

The pump will be replaced on a 12 year old sled under warranty ????

Let us know if it happens and what dealership it is - I need one too.

I know, I was amazed as well when I heard that.

I will post up when I get it into the dealership as to whether they actually cover it. The guy said that it was a manufacturing issue, and that yamaha is covering it.

I have seen that happen at least one other time on a yamaha sled as old as our venture on this site. I think it was last winter, and it was not an oil pump, but something else.

A similar instance was with my sport bike, Suzuki replaced the frame for free when it was like 8 yrs old. This happens on new design machines from time to time. With Yamaha, they had a lot of oil pump issues on 97 600 twins, and they made a new part number. I think they had vendor issues and they got a batch of bad oil pumps.
