Okay, hopefully this is not a "dumb question".
The newer type speedo & tach, say 04 forward or so.
Could a guy retro fit one of those onto an older sled, say a 93-97 electrics set up chassis?
Is there a battery or computer chip involved with the newer instrumentation set ups??
Also, speedometer drive & rpm informationr?
Just got a wild idea of adapting "the newer" looking instrumentation on my project sled & was curious if this is even possible.
Not worried about fitting it in the pod or anything like that. I will have so much fab work to do that this would be pretty easy in comparison to all the other work I will have...LOL
Thanks for any reply's or ideas here!!

most everything in a viper/rx1/vector guage will wire up. the tach wire is the only crapy thing, tach signal is counting 1 pulse for 1 revolution, older igintion tachs count 3 pulse for 1 revolution on a tripple and 2 pulse for every 1 revolution on a twin.
to install one on a 2bulb ignition is simple. for a single bulb ignition your going to want to ask an electrical guru if there is something you could install in line to convert the pulse. the rest of the stuff is just plug in. the drive shaft will have to be changed or drilled and tapped for the rotor. then its just a ground wire for the pickup, the rest of the wires are in the harness already.
dimmer
temp
oil
lights
12v
ground
gas

Hmmmm???
Thanks for the reply's so far.
I am "building" a sled based on a Exciter 93 SX front end but it will have the power plant & wiring harness from a 97 Vmax SX, which I am guessing is still pretty compatible with the "old stuff" vs the new technology.
Now with that said, I am guessing that based on the respective replys so far, I could still have some "interesting" challenges to make the new digital stuff work which is not surprising.
Some notes:
A) I do not need hand warmers. Our riding climate in the mtns here is not nearly as cold as the upper midwest etc.
I grew up in WI, rode thru out the UP & WI so I know what cold is & we dont get it here!! Riding temps here are NEVER below zero!! Mostly 10-30 degrees.
B) Not worried about warning lites.
C) Will have independent temp gauge for coolant.
Sooo...I could be screwed on this idea but...I thought I would at least take a look at it. Might have been a cool way to go looks wise but, I am a long ways off of this portion of the project so will keep my options open for now & I am open to whatever for now.
Thanks again.

Might work then huh??
The Vmax motor is the 600 twin with a Hauck 700 big bore kit.
So, I will be dealing with working to get the pulse right for the twin.
All I will care about is the speed & tach.
Lights, gas gauge, oil levels, etc do not concern me on this sled.
Also, its highly unlikely that it will ever be ridden after dark etc.
I am planning to use the fuel tank from the Vmax SX & figure I can view the fuel level visually thru the filler hole. This sled will not be used for long distance runs. Strictly a boondocker where we may ride at most 50 miles on a good day & that would be a heck of a great day for my wife & I.
All off trail riding in the mtns.
This will not be a speed sled either. I am focusing on 20-60mph & low end torque.
Got my Vmax4 for the "speed needs" !!
Thanks,
Rob

hand warmer functions in the guage are nothing but a digital reading. when they are not hooked up, they just dont show up.
as i stated above, temp input, gas input, oil input will all wire into the guage and work perfectly. all the digital guages are looking for 1 pulse for 1 rev. I used a Rx1 guage on my tripple. if you have a twin, old style ignition, the tach will work and will show double the rpms. you need some electro nerd to come up with a conversion to split the pulse in half.
speedo is easy to wire up.
if you was using a tripple i would say upgrade to the better ignition then you could use the newer guage easy.
all the warning functions are in the guage not in the cdi box. there are other fuctions that will flash codes on the guage but the basic functions will wire right up and work.
the tach is the problem. the rest is easy
for all the trouble, just buy a new vdo tach and screw the speed.
