Alright, so, my friend, who has no money what-so-ever, has a 198? ( think its an 88, but im not sure ) Excel V. It fires right up first pull, but when it starts, it backfires, then goes into reverse, and does everything in reverse, but the throttle response and everything is still there. The owner before him gave it to him, because he did work on the motor, and then it started running backwards. We are thinking this is a crank failure, but don't want to jump to conclusions. Can anyone help?

Hey that is exactly what my brothers srv did when he bought it from someone, after hours and hours of scratching our heads,we figured it out to be the wrong or bad cdi, the srv camme with a box of parts and also a few different cdi boxes. Does it use those little square boxes that are seperate from coils? check it out,too bad you dont have an extra one lying around. Hope this helps
check the timing, either timing ring is incorrectly installed, flywheel key misaligned or bad CDI.
