Let me start with the disclaimer this first...I have read the write ups several times and have searched other posts albeit I should have been sleeping that time of night. I have not done the coffee can trick before and what to make sure I understand this before proceeding so i do it correctly. If you all can provide me a little more detail, I'll go ahead and take snapshots of each step of the process to add to the write up as payment.

Since my W Arm is in now in pieces (http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showthread.php?t=53689), I want to shim it all up and do some maint on it bc it looks rough. Looking at the picture below, I was wondering where to insert the coffee can piece. Between the bushing (B) and the frame (A), the bushing (B) and the aluminum insert rod (C)? Do I bend the coffee can strip around the aluminum insert (C) for the length of the cylinder part of the skid that the bushing fits into? A little direction here and I will start the process and take pics along the way.

Questions:
1. Where do I put the shim? (No Jokes please...)

2. Is there a complete bushing kit that I can purchase or do I need to buy them individually?

3. Anything other suggestions or specific pics you'd like me to capture along the way?

The rear is from a 1999 600sx. Thanks.

I'm going to be doing the same shim trick. I'm waiting for the parts. I ordered my shims from teamalpine.com, I just went down the line and clicked on anything that said bushing, on the parts list for the rear suspension. I did the same thing earlier this year for the front end. After I did all that I found a bushing kit on Pioneer Performance's web site under rear suspension (scroll down toward the bottom of the page). The price is about the same as what I paid.

I had my W-arm welded, it was still in one piece. It had one large crack and two very small ones. I will be following your posts on this.

Just P.M. B.T.V. he will steer you in the right direction...from my interpretation & own doing, worked sweet...nice & tight...thanks to B.T.V...
Questions:
1. Where do I put the shim? (No Jokes please...)
A) I put mine on the out side of the nylon bushing...so that it can tighten the nylon around the shaft/bolt...you may need the trim the busing end gap to make it all work...you always want to protect the moving part with the plastic/nylon bushing...

2. Is there a complete bushing kit that I can purchase or do I need to buy them individually?
A) Yes different companies have them...Like try some of the sponsored vendors on this site...

3. Anything other suggestions or specific pics you'd like me to capture along the way?
A) Make sure it is all squared up after...mrviper has a few pics on where to put your square & what to loosen to bring it in...thanks mrV...

I did the rear in my Rx1 this way...

Hope this helps

i am doing mine now the shim seems like it needs to be wraped around the letter b in your pic ....the end gap was tight on mine so i am gonna make the shims needed fron some old sheet metal and see how it works ...just aint sure if shim goes around the outside of bushing or inside bushing wraped around the steel sleeve ....hope this makes sence ....and that i am right if not....... SCOTT can you jump in and point us in the right direction ..

wraped around the outside of the bushing, another medium to use is aluminum flashing at the hardware store. it can be cut with sissors and is very thin. you should have to press the collars back in when done but not so tight you might damage the bushing.

guys, i wouldnt bother to buy all new bushings, your going to shim them anyway. the w arm bushings are the only ones that ever get bad, unless you never greased your sled.

i made the mistake of putting to much metal on there and broke the shim when i forced the spindle in.be carefull

i did a 1/4 inch overlap ....and i made 2 shims for each side mabe 1/2 inch wide so grease would stil pass through all parts and not be stoped by the shim ill try to get pics i have the skid out ...

if you have a lathe you can make your own out something other than the cheap plastic yamaha uses. I WOULD NOT USE STEEL!!!!! as steel will rust and you will have a hell of a time getting them back out. i made bushing for my trailing arms out of brass or bronze (i cant remember which) they are a light press fit into the arms and a .001 or .002 oversize into the spindle. (this gives the grease a place to go.) i am going to do the same thing to my viper skid when it arrives next week. (i have an sx700 and am doing the mod)the shim trick works too and takes less time. :letitsnow
