I have a 72 project that I'm slowly gathering pieces for and one of the modifications that I want, is to lose the tank at the rear and go to the SR set-up. I don't believe that 72 SR parts are floating around out there everywhere, and if there were, they would probably be prohibitively expensive.
So I'm looking for the next best thing and thought of using a tank and seat from a 74 or 75 with some modifications. But these don't wrap around the tank close enough and I'm not sure it can be done to achieve the look that I'm after.
The seat is easy enough to make if I could find a tank that would work. Can anyone tell me anything about the SR tank? Capacity etc. Anyone happen to have one cheap? Yeah right! I know, pretty funny. Any info would be greatly appreciated and I'm certainly open to ideas and suggestions. Thanks. G.

And so it is, look at that, filler on the right side and everything. I'm guessing that the 74 GP 246 should be the same then as well. Thank-you, I'm on it. G.

Actually, after some investigation I have found that, whilst the SM/GP tank and seat is an option, the tank is too wide for the seat to come forward on the sides as on the SR. The filler is on the correct side, but that is not a concern for me. What I did find is the tank from the later GS 338/340 will probably work better in that regard. The tank is a little larger and filler is on the other side (left) and seat is all wrong in how it wraps around the tank, but I think with a little creative trimming and a good unpholsterer, I should be able to acheive the look that I want. I even had the idea the other night of using viper tailight lens and housing, how cool is that?
What 72 project have you begun? I'm kind of partial to the 433's myself. I'll PM you with some details of my project that should intrigue you. Oh, and I think I have a bead on a wealth of GS tanks and maybe a couple of seats, albeit in very poor condition. I just want the tank and need the metal piece in the seat that wraps around the tank, everything else can be easily fabricated. All that is, except one thing, and that is the rubber like cover that has the fuel lines go through it that the filter hangs off of. This piece is no longer available from Yamaha and the ones in the wreckers are all split! Anybody have any suggestions here? G.

Hey Chris, Happy New Year.
Got a GS tank, and even an old chassis to take all the brackets from.
Haven't done anything with the seat yet, still trying to get the motor sorted out. But am leaning towards building the seat from scratch to suit the way I want it.
I've decided to build an aluminum tank for the original 70 SS seat regardless, since I have another complete chassis (72 GP) that will make use of it. So I might even do that first. Too much other crap stealing my time.
Though I did manage the spend a nice day on my SRX today. Taking care of the real important stuff, RIDING!! Best. G.
