hey guys finally got my sled out for the first time since i bought it back in August... but i relized the brake pads are shot .. tore it apart and on my rotor i have quite a bit of free play between the rotor and the shaft.. front to back and side to side .. how much is normal and should you be able to feel it when u ride ???
Should be snug...you can sometimes (pine)/(put dimples in) the key way or key with a pointed punch to take up the slack or replace the key way...its a combination of two things, worn out key or rotor cut area...shafts are usually in good shape...
appreciate the input man thanx

I just replaced the key on my 2002 SXR last night and still have some rotational play, less than before but not snug.

Three things wear:
Side to side play is fine, rotational play is annoying but not really a problem until it gets excessive. If the hub wobbles on the shaft, it is not good.
- Jackshaft Slot
- Key
- Brake Hub Slot

Would it be ok to put a couple of spot welds on the key and grind them smooth to tighten up the play in the rotor? I'd just get a new key but I wanna get my sled back together and I don't have time to wait around for a new one.

If you are going that extent, why not just cut a new key out of key stock. If it is the hub that is damaged, you can use an oversize key and grind it to fit the jackshaft.

But the method you mention should work too. All that keyway does is provide braking. Of course brakes can be important.

Stock key size is 7mm x 7mm but if you have that much play then you may want to get a bigger piece and grind it down to take out the slop.

I have a different rotor that I'm putting on, the non worn side of the key fits tight in the hub and in the jackshaft. I'll look around town today to see if I can find some key stock, if I can't find any I'll just weld and grind mine.
