Help with phazer clutch always engaged.

Hello,

I'm helping my pastor out with his 1989 phazer 485. The problem is that it finally blew a belt (he doesn't ride it much or that hard) and so he purchased a new belt for it, but now it always wants to be engaged.

He picked up a HP3021 and a 25t4320 which are both 1 15/64" wide but it seems like they both are just wide enough to cause the primary to grab them at idle.

Now I don't personally ride yamaha so I don't know anything about yamaha clutches, but usually there is an adjustment for this.

Can anyone help me out and tell me what I need to do to make the primary sheaves about 1/32" to 1/16" wider?

unless the primary is not releasing all the way,you adjust belt deflection with
the secondary,i'm a little unfamiliar with that year PZ but it looks like there's
shims(26?) you need to add so the two halves(sheaves) spread thus loosing the belt, his he sure thats the right belt?? should stay with OEM

I would guess that the primary pulley is not opening fully. Put the belt on the primary only and see if the inside of the belt will touch the shaft and it will move. If it is tight against the sheaves and it will not touch the shaft, the pulley may be sticking because of non-use and corrosion or a cord from the blown belt could have wound around the shaft inside and is stopping the travel. You can try pushing in on the outside of the clutch with the belt off - it will take a lot of grunt to do it and the Phazer is not built to make it easy to do, but it should move in at least a small amount. By doing that and letting it snap back, you may get it to pop open. You could also run the motor with the belt off and carefully increase the speed until the clutch starts to close and then let off the throttle.

If you are familiar with clutches, you can remove the clutch and take out the 6 cover screws- they will be under spring tension. You should then be able to find out what is limiting the travel.

If the belt seems to go to the bottom of the drive pulley like it should, put the belt around the driven pulley only. See how the belt sits in relation to the outer edge of the pulley. It should not stick out past the pulley very far - I think there is a dimension for it that I do not remember right now - maybe about 1/16 of an inch. If it is riding too high, someone may have removed shims from between the sheaves as daman suggested to compensate for belt wear. That would be unusual though.

#26 washers need to be put back in between the sheaves if you put a new belt on,( to adjust belt deflection)( right now it is too tight!) you will probably find them just under the helix on the shaft when you take it apart. if you have never done this before, take it to someone who is knowledgable with secondaries or you may get hurt! (dealer or friend)they can show you the proper way.cheap insurance! thank you daman for making it easier to explain with the pic!
