I want to put studs on my 99 vmax 500. Only gonna put on 96. I have no tunnel or exchanger protectors.
My question is, do I really need the protectors?
Some people have told me no.

Yes, make sure to get both tunnel AND heat exchanger protectors. Otherwise you could be stranded in the cold, not fun, and usually pricey.
96 will be fine for a 500, I would only stud the center belt.

i can see exchanger guards but what is the point of tunnel protectors? There are no exchangers on the tunnel.

Its to protect the TUNNEL itself from stud damage when you land hard with the suspension depressed all the way... It will gouge the hell out of the aluminum Tunnel underside.

I always get a BAD mental image of a studded track spinning very fast with the closest part of your body being your butt and other body parts close by.

I would not try to skimp on the 20-30 dollars you would need to get the tunnel protectors.
Plus that noise of the studs shredding the tunnel has to be a very nasty one.

some take old high faxes and line then up with the clips on the track then rivet the highfax there basically it keeps the studs from touching and it doesn't hurt anything really when the highfax comes in contact with the clip area.

Also remember your gas tank sits above the tunnel.
ok, well do I have to remove the suspension to install this stuff?

yes, you also have to remove the track/driveshaft to install the upper rivets for the front protectors
I just studded my wifes 600 sx. I installed original style tunnell protectors, Dennis Kirk 15 bucks each. Remember you have to remove the fuel tank to access the front bolt holes in the tunnel. For the front exchanger, oem frame gaurds are on back order, with no available date. Bender racing has some for $59.00. I made my own out of 3/4 square aluminum stock and used some aluminum brazing stock to weld to heat exchanger. track and drive shaft had to come out. Good luck Al
