Hi guys,
I just got back from Munising and had a couple close calls. 60 miles and I added 9.5 gallons so i'm getting about 6 mpg. Is there any way to get better mpg with my sled? 96 vmax 600 xt. I almost have to carry gas with me in case I make a wrong turn.

check on some post they dont get real good milege but thats excesive get fuel right and cluthed right that will help.is it running clean or is it running like its loading up ?what kind of conditions were you in?

I have a 2001 phazer that was getting that kind of mileage. It turned out that a previous owner played with the carburetors and the float heights were way off. You should get in the neighborhood of 12 mpg with your sled.

check your jetting, clutching, track deflection, etc. should be better then that i always got 10-11 on my '95 vm 600.

but no outa the gate they never were tha best..

yep ,you gotta keep up on those sleds as far as jetting and CLUTCHING, track deflection,etc....When i bought my 94 vmax, (brand new) I was getting 8-9 mpg outta da box..... I dropped the needles and added a set of psi pipes and believe it or not I was getting over 10! ( the rollers are notorious for going bad , not to mention the bushings on both the primary and secondary)

carbs are jetted stock. The primary clutch is brand new and just was installed the end of last year. And I had the carbs cleaned and "tuned" by the dealer. Didn't do a very good job of tuning if you ask me.

check plug color and wash in temps you normally ride in,may be able to lean her up some safely, do it in baby steps..

check track deflection, ski alignment..tells us what rpm's your seeing pinned outa the hole then top end also...

you say jetting is stock you sure how do you know,i'm just asking...

I just had the carbs cleaned by the dealer and they removed my broken tempa flow. They checked to make sure they were jetted stock so that I wouldn't have any problems. They also just reinstalled my rear suspension so I'm assuming they would check the track deflection? The problem riding here is one day it can be 35 and the next it can be 5 outside. Depends on the month.

or the clutching was set back to stock. some one above asked for rpm's for engagement and wot. from what i read on here those sleds where clutched badly from yamaha and a clutch kit/adjustment was almost always nessasary for the sled to reach its potential.

it engages somewhere around 3700 rpm's i believe. WOT is about 7800-8000 i think. I'm not 100% sure on that one. The guy that put the new clutch in is a Yamaha tech at one of the local dealerships that did the side job for me. He told me that he could get my sled 10mpg consistently but it would cost me $100 for him to do it. Thinking about going that route and I don't know a whole lot about these motors. Any help is very much appreciated.

that motor is only supposed to peak at 7700rpm. suppsed to engage at 4000rpm. sounds like it needs a new primary spring or a couple of engagement shims and might need some more weight in the tips (top hole). start with the shims and adjust the weights from there.

I think i'm going to take it to the yamaha tech. I don't feel comfortable playing with some of this stuff. And he knows what he did with the clutching in it because he installed it a year ago. These sleds have a 10 gal tank correct?

yes 10 gal...i cereous too see how he can get you that mileage for 100 buxs let us know what he does...

I'm pretty sure he is just going to work on my carbs for me. From what I understand they are jetted very rich. I'm not comfortable playing with them myself so I think that is what he is going to do.

post back your results...

Before I take it in would a new belt help at all? I bought it from my friend and don't think the belt has been replaced in 2-3 years. I have 3 brand new ones at home ready to go if that would make a difference. I would be very happy if my sled even got 8-9 mpg. Atleast it would give me an extra 20 miles to find gas.
