all hardpacked trails in Munising. I even tried to not accelerate too fast and held a steady speed of about 45 the whole time. I got about 7mpg on the way back when I did that.
Your cruising RPM's should be a good indicator of what you should expect for milage on any given day. As stated by others if the conditions are loose/heavy where the machine has to work/higher RPM's = worse milage. If it's hardpacked/tight should see a lot less RPM's during cruising and = better milage.

Here are what my carbs are set at. I haven't taken it in yet. Might try to adjust it myself. Screws are set to 1.5 turns out, jets are stock size, float height at 14mm. Any suggestions where to start?

I may be a little behind on this post, but we had that gas milage problem on a 98 Vmax, and Frank at Meyer yamaha in Ishpeming walked me through the adjustment to the needle over the phone. It involved moving that little nylon washer a couple notches. It brought the milage up to 11mpg. I could look up the adjustment if you are still interested. Or call Meyer and ask for Frank the mechanic. He was very cool and helpful. Good luck.

I had the same problem. I was doing a little better than 6mpg, i was getting about 8-9. What i did about 8yrs ago at the advice of this site was to put a thinner headgasket on, carbon tech reeds, and drop the needles ( raise the clip) a half notch. You have to run premium gas after this but i always do anyhow. I not only get close to 11-12 now it really woke the sled up. I got all my parts at Xtreme Powersports (PH 518-758-6507). Im not sure # is current but they do have a web site. Just make sure the rest of your stuff is in order also like the advise above.
