I am the orginal owner of a 97 600 XT and unfortunately I blew a cylinder this weekend. I did a compression test and found 60-90 psi in one cylinder and 0 in the other. I then pulled the cylinder head and the RH jug was badly gouged in the fwd facing position (exhaust out) and the piston was damaged. After I pulled the jug, the upper ring was half gone and the lower ring was in place but fused at the damaged spot. I also noticed the y exhaust pipe had a small hole in it on the LH port.
I plan to replace the blown jug and piston along with ring sets on both sides to get the Yami back on the trail. Before I do I am looking for some advice:
1) Just wondering what would blow out a cylinder like that (bad gas, plugged carb, worn ring, etc).
2) Is it possible to re-sleeve the jug and/or have it re-nickle celled (sp?) from a machine/chrome shop.
3) Is there an aftermarket set up? If not, does anyone know of someone selling a used jug and piston.

1) From the description, it sounds like a lean burn down caused by a plugged jet, air leak......You'll have to do some digging. If the carbs are spotless, and I mean spotless then you'll have to dig deeper.
2) Possible to have re coated depending on depth of gouge. Someone here may also have a used one in good shape. Somebody will chime in to recommend a shop.

looks like that second cyl isn't so good either...like chief said could have been a lean burn down, check carbs and clean, post a wanted ad or check ebay for used parts may be the easiest and cheapest...but need to find out what happen so it don't happen again.
edit....i just seen this is a '97 they had problem's that year with the pistons
the ring pin would fall out letting the ring turn and catch the ports, that could have been what happen..

All right, am I missing something here?? Are there pics I'm not seeing or are you just 'figure of speech'ing me?
check to see if the ring butt pins are still in the pistons, that year yamaha had a problem with them falling out and causing the rings to spin and catch on the ports and break also taking out the bottomends as well.my bro bought 1 that year and at 2000 miles caught it just in time!

Yep, 97 600 twin's had a big problem with the ring pins falling out, then allowing the ring to rotate and snag on the ports. It all goes downhill very quickly when that happens. Be sure to check for the pin, it probably is what caused this.

I checked the damaged piston and the upper ring pin is present but it is loose (wobbles around). The lower ring pin is in place and robust. I replaced both ring sets about 2500 miles ago (3 years ago) so it was probably time to do again.
I have already cleaned the carbs (jets were clean), drained all the gas and will replace the y-pipe (one w/o a hole or crack). Then I plan to replace the RH damaged jug & piston and rings sets all around. I hope this is enough to fix the problem.

how was plug color on that cyl.??
Call US Chrome, they can repair the cylinders. I just had a set of Cat cylinders repaired which were in very bad shape. They are located in Fondelac WI. Do not use aftermarket piston's if possible.

Reuse Head Gasket and Cylinder Gasket - Vmax 600XT
I am rebuilding my 97 Yamaha 600 XT motor and I was wondering if you can resuse the Yamaha Head and Cylinder Gaskets. I did a ring job 4 years ago and replaced both gaskets then, so they have only been used once.

Gaskets are one use pieces. Buy new ones.
Also, I have never had an issue with aftermarket pistons in any machine I have run them in. In many instances, the aftermarket ones are stronger and lighter. Now keep in mind I don't use cheap aftermarket pistons. it hink you are asking for it if you do.
