We are taking a trip to run some more of the Minnesota trail system. We are staying in the Detroit Lakes area for Christmas I understand the trail system has about 200 miles of trails. How is the snow and ice? Any other recommended trails to run? We will be traveling from east to west and then back. If anyone will be around that area we will be leaving on the 20th of Dec. until the 29th. I plan on making a loop into the up and stopping in Curtis Michigan if the money holds out. Al

I just checked the weather and found a Blizard is hitting now, suspected 16" snow
The blizzard just passed this morning, I believe that DL got about 10-12 inches of snow, not entirely sure. The winds were blowing quit a bit though so not all areas got the same amount. Here in NW MN we only got about 6 inches, but thats better than nothing, atleast we finally have snow.

Brainerd area looks to have gotten about 12" or so. We had about 3" before so we are starting to make some progress. Went for a quick run late in the afternoon yesterday and it was alright. Cold though. Today we are maybe going to make -5F for the high. Looks to be that way most of this week and into the next if the extended forecast is sort of accurate. Talked to some of the local club guys and it sounds like they will do the first grooming run about Wednesday or so.

We have a warm place to stay, my father inlaws house is right on the trail system. His basement is heated and the sleds will be able to drive in and drive out. The floor is heated and is always warm.

We are leaving Saturday Morning around 6 am. I hope to be at the cottage by 10 pm. Driving 3/4 ton suburban pulling 24' enclosed with 3 sleds. We can usually get to Mouston for a fuel stop and then make it the rest of the way. This is weather/ wind permitting. I am glad fuel is cheaper now. On the way back I plan on traveling on 210 going east towards Deluth. If snow is good may stop midway and ride, otherwise going to travel through the U.P. and stor at Curtis. I will take pictures and post a ride report when we get back.

I was in northern MN (Ely to be exact) I know that is a ways from DL but we had 8" of very loose snow and It was also 30° on Saturday. Sunday was a blizzard, so I didn't get out much, couldn't see worth sh*t! Got all turned around on the lake. Got 18" or so of snow. It was -32° and Sunny when I got up on Monday, didn't leave for home until noon. I went for 2 short rips around 10am after it warmed up to -18. The drifts were deep on the lake. No trails were open yet up there. But I'm sure they'll be open very soon now.

Trails should have opened on the 15th, usually that is the "official" date to open all the trails. There is plenty of snow to ride on now around the Iron Range.

Use this link at the DNRs site. There's also a list of trails and their individual conditions.
