I am rebuilding my 97 Yamaha 600 XT motor and I was wondering if you can resuse the Yamaha Head and Cylinder Gaskets. I did a ring job 4 years ago and replaced both gaskets then, so they have only been used once.

the base gasket yes use a little copper spray tack adhesive, the head
gasket you could spray that too but i don't, i use new,,hate to be up in
the land of nowhere and she starts to leak...hmmmm not good..

i wouldn't suggest it.....gaskets are cheaper than pistons and cylinders. it would suck having a leaky base gasket. not only would you leak coolant, but you could leak air, which would cause a lean condition. if the head gasket leaks, you can have the coolant system get pressurized from the power stroke. the piston comes up to compress the fuel/air mixture and it pushes some of the pressure into the coolant system. not to mention that the coolant can wash the oil off the cylinder walls, causing scoring to the cylinders and piston skirts. just spend $40 and get new gaskets. using hi-tack spray is just a redneck repair...IMO.

I would replace myself never re-used any of our gaskets heck i got a set that was used for 15minutes when the belt came off the oilpump / waterpump my dads vmax and fried the engine after running for that long those are sitting in the garage.

I would never re use any gaskets besides O ring types. And even then, I would put new ones on.

Now if you have no other option, and have to ride that sled, then you could, but I would not expect it to hold up like a new gasket.

Replace the gaskets. O rings sometimes reusable.
If you dont want to spend the money you can buy gasket material and cut your own for the base, New one for the head gasket.

Depends if you want to work on it alot or Ride it alot.

you can make your own base gasket of the paper type, if that's what your engine uses (material wise) and if the thickness is the same. if the gasket material is thicker than the stock stuff, all your ports would be raised vs stock, which would advance the port timing. its fine to use the gasket material and make reed gaskets etc, but just buy new head gaskets and base gaskets. if anyone knows where to get .010", .015", .020", and .025" thick gasket material, please let me know.
