Hey all,
I need some help please!
My brother gave me a snowmobile that I think is a 91 Phazer II I was wondering if there was a site that I could verify the vin number?
And I am also wondering if someone would be able to tell me where to start as far as getting it to run. it ran good a couple of years ago, but then it sat there unattended for two years. today We tried to get it going and it started right up pretty easily, but wouldn't stay running. We thought that it wasn't gettting the proper amount of air so we took off the hoses to the air box, but that didnt seem to help. Is this thing going to need a carb rebuild, and how much do you think it will run me?
Thanks for the help

carb rebuild is free ...just get a can of carb cleaner ...clean the main and pilot jets and blow out passages with carb cleaner and than compresssed air and drain and add fresh gas and it will probally run like a top

If you mean verify the year and model by using the VIN, then simply post it and we can help you. If you meant something else, please clarify.
There is carb info for that sled posted in the Tech Pages which is accessible from the TY home page. It should have 2 Mikuni B38-32 carbs on it. As mentioned above, carb cleaning is a standard maintenance item for sleds, and usually can be performed without any new parts. However, all components should be inpected carefully. Also keep track of which holes the rubber plugs are in when you take the bowl off. You can check the parts diagram on the Yamaha site to verify.

Welcome to the site.
There is huge amounts of info here, so do some searches and if you don't find what you need, just ask and someone will more than likely be able to help.

On the Phazer carbs each carb has 2 black plugs, these plugs must be installed in the correct tube, if installed correctly the engine will not run right. Just take note where each plug goes. Al

Where are you at in SE Wi?
My guess is that the carbs need a good cleaning, and perhaps some fresh gas. The fuel we have around here goes bad quicker than non oxygenated fuels.

Me again,
I will try to answer all the questions
First I want to say thanks for the welcome. That is great.
Horkn, I see you aren't too far from me, I live in West Bend and the sled is in Allenton. Workin on gettin it home tho. Would be a lot easier if I could drive it onto the trailer.
Yamahead, If you knew me even a little, you would know that even the simplest job is gonna cost me something, but my bro-in-law is a little more mechanically inclined than i am, and said that he will help.
We will definatey try the carb cleaner and my brother thought that I should try some octane booster as well.
Do you think that I should pull the carbs apart anyway?
I will definately keep an eye out for those little black plugs. Are there any tricks I should know about before I get started? Like where to start. I already feel like I'm in way over my head.
Hey Ding,
That is exactly what I meant, here it is

First off welcome to the site. Do a little pokin around on here for some info on your sled, you'll find a ton of info and tons of people more than happy to help ya out. If you cant find somethin just ask, someone prolly knows. TY is pretty sweet like that.
As far as the carbs go, dont be afraid to dive in. just have a relativly clean spot to do it and keep track of all (dont worry theres not that many) the parts and where they go. Just clean all the parts like mentioned before and put everything back where it goes and you'll be fine. If you run into any problems or just have some questions - ask - somebody knows....
Welcome aboard man!

I would get a service manual, maybe on ebay.
Yep, that sled should be a '91.
There is a simple write-up on the Mukuni butterfly carbs, I'll try to locate it for you.
It really is very simple though. Take the bowl off, and note where the plugs are. Then simply clean each fuel circuit and check with air flow and a good light. Put it back together, and make sure that you don't leave any air leaks at the rubber boots they go into.
You might start by reading the carb cleaning info in the Tech Pages on this site. The carbs are different, but the basic procedure is the same.

If you have a digital camera, you can take lots of pics if you're worried about putting it back together, or even a video camera may help.

Have both a digital camera and digital video recorder, and plan on using both - a lot!
Thanks again
