if i take a steel ruler and set it on the belt from the primary to the secondary what should i be measuring and what would be in spec

Proper spec(yamaha's) is 1.5mm above to .5mm below the edge of the secondary with your belt, so check that too.

Ride.Race.Live that covers your sled too.

Never rely on that method for belt deflection.

The Yamaha method is a guideline, but belt lengths vary, center to center can vary, etc. Use the method I posted above and you will get consistant results! This will work on any sled!

what about proping the sled up and taking out shims until the track either just starts to move or will turn easily by hand?

lol......

Really and why not sir?thats the way Yamaha the makers of theses sleds say it should be done,,that and C/C,,lol first time hearing of using a ruler to
check def.,back in the ol VM days you do that with the W/P belt but never
heard of doing it for the drive. to many variables like heat, belt compound your strait edge, your finger force etc...yamaha has no spec for that procedure, why is that??

C/C along with belt height is how it's done on a stock sled..

Exactly what srxspec said. And just because the book says so it doesn't mean that it is the Bible.
