I'm not sure if it was posted here yet but Saturday night a guy hit a utility pole head on and was killed. He was riding 2up with his wife, she survived but lost one of her legs. ALCOHOL WAS A FACTOR. The accident happened on the trail along old 27 just south of Gaylord.
It's the first death this year here in Michigan.

I read that today on my local paper's website (Petoskey News Review). It's too bad to see something like this. I know someone that was killed on a sled, it really makes you think differently when you're riding.

This is real sad. However, being under the influence greatly increased their chances of injury. So, if your out riding please try and limit the alcohol consumption. It will payoff when you make it home safe. Happy and Safe riding everybody!

We have had good riding conditions for a month now here in Gaylord. To be honest I would have figured that something like this would have happened earlier.
Some people will never learn. Fortunately, I live here and can ride during the week and avoid the weekends when the wannabe snowcrossers (yes, I'm probably a wannabe as well but I get the trails to myself!)and partyers are around.

31 year old guy & his 28 year old wife. On a 2009 Ski Doo.
Alchohol & speed..always a mixture for problems!!
Had my worst trail riding crash back in 1980 due to the same thing.Stupid!!
Me & my best buddy were both racing back to the hotel at 2am after a night of pool playing & drinking. I totaled a 1980 Exciter into a bunch of small trees in N Wisconsin...but...I walked away with only bruises. Guess what..that woke me up!! Fortunately, I was damn lucky & learned how dumb that really was!!
Oh yeah, he wrecked his sled, also a 1980 Exciter, on the same curve too, we both were going too fast on a logging road we did not know!! DUMB-DUMB ASSES!!
Have not been drunk since then either!!
That will be tough for both of these families during the Holiday Season.

My Condolences Go Out To Their Famillies Yes Drinking Was A Factor But There Was Still A Loss Of Life, A Good Friend Of Mine Had The Same Situation Happen To Him Last Year But It Was His Wife That Was Killed On The Snowmobile And Yes Alcohol Was A Factor And Let Me Tell You The Situation Is Still Being Dragged On In The Courts.

what are the real solutions
I have had a theory about how to thin the herd of drunk riders so to speak. As with most riders, I have done it in the past but realized that it is such a stupid thing to do.
But, I think that if you are caught riding beyond the legal limit, same as automobile .08, not only do you go to jail and prosecuted, but your sled is confiscated and sold at auction with a portion of the sale going to local government and a larger portion going to the snowmobile trail fund. The owner can buy his sled back at the auction if he/she wishes.
If you drink and ride, you are taking more than your life in your hands. As a firefighter, I have seen too many times that the dumb don't die.
