Have not pulled the cover off yet to see what happened but i'm guessing the chain broke and then broke the case.Has anyone had this happen before? Its on a viper. How big of a job is it to change the cases? Should i be looking for other things why i'm in there?

I would guess the lower gear bolt broke off and the bolt head punched a hole in the case. Its not to bad of a job. You may as well replace the bearings while its apart. I could weld the case for you for about $50 if its repairable.

if its only the case broken then just use some $6 jbweld to fix it up. my guess is the chain was adjusted to much or forgotten about and busted up the case, not a hard job at all, should take you about an hour-2 hours to have fixed.
Tore it apart today, and looks like you are exactly right,The bolt is broke off in the end of the drive shaft, and the chain is all broke up as well. The case is destroyed. What would cause this to happen? Chain tension not adjusted properly possible?Yamahasrx700 said:I would guess the lower gear bolt broke off and the bolt head punched a hole in the case. It happened to me about a year ago. Maybe the bottom bolt was too tight when I put it back together. Send some pics of the case, I might be able to save it.
Trust me, there is no saving this one, looks like the chain went around in there a few times, broke on the top side, big holes on the bottom plus a lot of cracks through out.Yamahasrx700 said:It happened to me about a year ago. The same thing happened to a buddy on his SXR600 last season. The bolt head was broken off of the driveshaft, and blew a hole through the case.
What is the supposed reason that this happens? As the gear is splined, no rotational force is put on the bolt, shear force is close to non existant too, unless I'm missing something.
Any ideas?
I've picked up an 02 Viper this year, and was just in the chaincase a few days ago for an inspection. I want to prevent this from happening to me, if possible
Thanks
