I have been experiencing issues w/ my tach light flickering and going out under acceleration. Additionally, my kill switch isn't functioning. From my research on this site, I have come to the conclusion that my under engine wiring harness has probably been damaged via rub thru. I have removed the airbox from the carbs and have bent back the metal retainers that secure the harness, however, I cannot locate where the harness comes out under the engine. Does anyone have any pics that could illustrate the location of this harness. From the reading I have done, this sounds like a common problem and a "How To" would seem Sticky-worthy. Thanks in advance for the help.

the harness comes up by the Mag side of the carbs and goes down under the engine and pipes over to the front of the belt cover and to the two plugs, its a PITA to pull out.
is it the four or so wire group that has a bell shaped rubber loom?the harness comes up by the Mag side of the carbs and goes down under the engine and pipes over to the front of the belt cover and to the two plugs, its a PITA to pull out.

Are you trying to locate the harness up by the carbs there? or down by the hood? its the only wires that go to the hood harness, then follow that down, and wiggle the harness to see what moves, thats what i did. Its in a rubber loom yes, don't know if its bell shaped, didn't pay attention to the shape haha.
I unplugged the harness at the hood...there were 2 square plugs. The problem I have is I can't see any harness up by the pipes that looks like the harness I unplugged.

It goes down under the pipes on the clutch side, under the pipes and across the belly pan and goes up under the motor near mag side.... Thats as easy as i can explain it.

You said you can't see a harness like the one you unplugged coming up by the pipes?? It crosses the sled diagonally. Goes from the two connectors up at hood, goes under pipes and motor, and then comes up from behind the brake rotor over above the chain case area. Simple suggestion, easy to do, just a little more work...take the pipes and can off and you'll really have a lot more working room.

Should be zip tied to the coolant hose. The one with the bell cover has the magneto plug in it. It is close to that one.

i fixed mine last year w/the string trick / taping and wrapping in plastic convoluted plastic. at the end of last year i was having more issues. so i pulled the harness out on the brake side. you can undo the clutchside motor mount (to help tilt the motor) and you can get it out. i checked the harness and ran along the fuel rail and inbetween the engine and clutch housing. most important!!! while you are at it check the CDI box above your left footwell. it is inside the plastic above the sheet metal that your toes go underneath and check for chafing there as well. two sets of wires come into the bottom of the CDI at a 180. they will chafe and arc on that sheet metal. i was having all kinds of problems. good luck.

I Had The Same Problem Last Season And I Remember Doing The String Trick As Well. I Worked From The Hood Back And Found The Rub Thru To Be In A Place I Would Have Never Got To With Out Pulling It Back. Its A Pain But After You Repair It Tape The Living S!@# Out Of It I Used Some Black Gorilla Tape. Good Luck Becarful Not To Make It Too Big With The Tape!

lol was it just me or is it a PITA to pull out from under the motor, i was pissed, i was like, oh this is easy, and it was, but it took some meat to get it to move

PINA? yes. hard? no. i use two hands... that's the way i like to do it. HA ha! one to push or wiggle the harness under the engine and one by the rotor using constant pull to get it out. once out, this year i said screw it and ran it across the carbs. why put it back under there? just in case u have to work on it again. and it would have to be an explosion of epic proportions for the belt to get to it. i am using the original hook right there at the end of the clutch cover... and i am rambling
sorry

They are real easy to get out from under the engine if you take your time and be sure to release the clamps. Just tie a string to the end, and it will be easy to pull back in.
The key to pulling wires, is to not ever force it. Find the resistance and remove it.
