Is this what a blown headgasket looks like? [pics]

I compression tested my 1 cylinder 300cc engine to about 40 psi and noticed bubbling where the head meets the cylinder when pull starting it. This was after an overheating incident.

My question is, the gasket looks good to me, and was wondering how to tell if it's bad or I just needed to re tighten the head bolts? Trying to decide what the next step is here...any help would be most appreciated!

if you look at the right side at the gasket, you will see 2-stroke oil that have been coxed on the gasked. I dont really know how to eksplain it in english :/

hope you understand me :)
 
I see what you mean, the gasket is wet with oil or coolant, meaning it was passing through. Can I just try to flatten each surface and reuse the gasket?
 
Are you rebuilting the motor? That piston/head look like they have some detonation on them. Anyone else think that?

Wasn't planning on it, I got 40-60psi on the compression gauge with it leaking out the side and I know my compression gauge is off by 30ish psi.

With all this snow and a week back order on the head gasket, I'm tempted to flatten both surfaces and try and re-use the headgasket. Will I immediately know if that won't work? i.e. smoke or some sort of failure?
 
You be better of cleaning it and applying some spray tack. Can't remember who makes it, but it works very well. I was just concern that the piston was so clean and you have a few dark lines running up and down the cyl wall. I might be wrong, but it looks like it could use a rebuild.
 
if you do so, you may do some more trubbel with the engine, its not the intelligent way of fixing those cind of problems.

you should check the bolt over the problem-area.

the best way is to change the gasket, and clean all parts. check for grades in the head and the sylinderpart.

the gasket is garbage! i guess it is damaged and not flat anymore (bigger)

Okay I will do that, I'll check the local dealer for some spray tack, I assume that's to keep the gasket in place and help it re-seal.

I see what you mean with the dark lines, but when I run a feeler gauge on them they don't even register so I think it's still sealing good as the walls are in good shape.
 
Anyway...
Did a quick search and the spray is made by Permatex. Spray on gasket called " high tack" or "copper"

thanks!! I wonder how I get the torque specs and tightening pattern
 
i wouldnt so much worry about a rebuilt right now if it runs alright but it deffintly looks like your going to need a hone job on those clyinders & probably rings.you can do that in the spring or whenever. but if you try & cobble those gaskets together then your going to be sitting out more than a week.i would rather wait & get the new gaskets.
 
You really need to pull the cylinder and hone it. Check the piston and if the ring groove (and the rest of it) is OK, just clean it up and put her back in. Add new rings and a gasket set. I would probably surface the head and cylinder. That may only mean putting it on sandpaper on a piece of glass. Do it right or you couldd be doing it again as soon as it gets warmed up. I think I have a new overhaul gasket set if you want it. That is if you could wait for it to get to you.

Yeah I was definitely planning on surfacing the head and cyl with a piece of glass and sandpaper. I am going to wait and not try and cobble it back together, it doesn't make sense to do the job twice.

I'll PM you for the gasket kit, as that would be awesome, especially if it has a head gasket in it! I have to wait for the dealer to re-open for torque spec's anyways.

Nothing like Antifreeze to wash off the carbon and..... clean the lower crank bearings of oil ...... :(
