Well I put a 156 on the viper this year and got my first ride this year a couple days ago unfortunately, I was a little un impressed. Being a novice tuner I need a couple tips. I couldn't pull more than 8500 rpms, and had could not out run my dad on his stock 99 mtn max. When it got steep and deep I could out pull him, but I expected more from the 156. It pushes like crazy, and got stuck in places that I would have expected a the 144 to get through. I know I have to adjust the primary for the RPMs, but I have so much freakin ski pressure it is ridiculous. Wind blown cornices where my dad broke through with his mtn max, I plowed into and had to jump off and tractor out of. I was a little frustrated. I know I wasn't pulling peak RPM's, but still I was very frustrated at the end of the day. Incase it doesn’t show. I have a 04 mtn viper with a 156, team roller secondary, and slp pipes. It ran great last year, but the 144 lacked the float that I wanted. Any tips on suspension set up and clutching would be appreciated... Before the shift out it will pull 8900 rpms, then only pull between 83- 85 in the powder wide open.

Gearing down for the longer track will help with the RPM. Loosen the front limiter straps and get an MPI transfer enhancement kit to get rid of the transfer rods. You will want to be geared 20/42 or somewhere in there. Also get ski bottoms from a 2005 Mtn Viper. All your hardware will switch over. Your dad's MTN max is only turning a 136 x 1.5 track, has 9t drivers and is geared taller.

the 99 mtn max came with a 2" track, and 8 tooth drivers, but that is beside the point. do you think that it is a gearing problem and not a clutching problem? i think i am geared at 21/42. One thing that i regret about the team secondary is that it is not very adjustable unless you have a fortune to spend on helixes and springs. I was thinking about removing the rivet on the end of the primary weight but wasn't really sure.
Stock skid??

You should call Hartman, he'll know what gearing you should be running with that set-up.
Someone may know in the mountain section. If I remember correctly though, I've only seen one person post in there that had a 156". My guess is you need some lower gearing yet, RXMAX's post of 20/42 sounds pretty close to me, but just a guess. If rider skill is close, your Viper set-up should get around quite a bit better than your dad's MM set-up. A 156" vs a 141...no competition.
