i have a 2003 viper mountain, pretty much stock, it has a silencer and variflow, and earlier this week we were riding in the snowy mountains by laramie wyoming. i was running 145 main jets, and i blew the rings on my center piston. i had my vari-flow set to rich, and clutched for 8000-10000. any ideas on what would cause this? the center sparkplug was white, which would mean it was running lean, but 145 jets is for -20 to 0 degreees and it was about 25 degrees, which would mean i was running rich, but i have never heard of vipers having a problem with blowing rings. thanks for any help.

boots all ok? Air got in there some how. Boots were leaking... or cracked. Boots not tightened. Ect. plugged jets= lack of fuel..... for the air that's there.

Also i doubt you blew the rings.either a hole i the piston, or chipped the ring valley. melted it anyways. Whitre is the alu, minim melted.

^^^x2....

open her up and post pics then we can have a look...ditch the vari-blow too

opened her up today, no pics yet, but the piston is pretty beat up, same with the dome, and there was a piece of aluminum stuck in the dome, which looks like a piece of a ring. the cylinder looks okay though, and there are no holes melted in the piston.

well i took out the cylinder, and the rings were not blown, part of the skirt broke off the bottom of the piston, and some of the pieces of that got on top of the cylinder beating it up. bad news is, a large piece went down into the crank, and broke a hole in the crank case about the size of a quarter. so now what are my options? any suggestions?

You can either replace the crank case or.... I have found the broken piece of aluminum and welded the piece back in. this take about an hour of time, due to sizing, welding and grinding. Either way a total rebuild is in order. Check the crank for problems, ie brgs, bent rod ect. with a broken skirt, a punched hole the cylinder would definatly run lean for a short while until total melt down and sieze.
