new to sledding this year, own a 98 VMAX 600XT and a 95 VMAX 500.
had them both gone through by a local sled mechanic who says the marks on the oil pump ( my 600 )are set to factory specs, however it seems to be a pig in the oil consumption department, have burnt up a tank and a half out of each sled and gone through over 4L of oil, my 600 seems to use twice as much as my wife's 500...........is this normal or is my oil pump gone???

thanks.................

Sounds like either you oil cable is not adjusted right or your pump is gone. Check the cable where it has a connection just above the carbs. If you have had the carbs off it have not have seated properly at the slip-over connection

is the cable isn't unseated...

well lining up the marks isn't always best, there was no issues with the pumps on either those sleds you just need to adjust the cable so the marks are just before lined up at wide open throttle.

with the sled off move the throttle lever all the way to the bar, check
down at the pump and see if the marks are lined up,if they are you'll want to readjust it so it's just before there lined up,find the adjuster joint and
pull back the rubber shielding and there's a lock nut then collar you turn
wile watching the marks on the pump..

same way on bolth sleds, but beforee that adjust throttle end play to 2mm.

pump bad?

just wondering what you found out, i am having the same problem with my 98 VMAX 600 SX. Was your pump bad? thanks, tim

The pumps on the 98 600 twins should be the updated style. The 97's were the ones with oil pump problems.

But you never know, maybe these 98's had 97 spec motors/ oil pumps in them, or maybe someone put a 97 motor in a 98?

Leftover parts on very early build next year models will sometimes have the old parts if they don't affect advertised power or features.

That said, there is no guarantee that even the better pump design won't fail.

My 97's old oil pump made the sled smoke while idling, and it needed a tank of oil for every tank of gas, if not more. It actually fouled spark plugs if it wasn't ridden like it was stolen.

How do the plugs look on both sleds? That will tell you a lot, but noticing the oil consumption will give you a hint, along with smoky 70's style start ups.
