Riverrunner I have a 97 MM also with Smart Carb was wondering the samething. I believe from my research that there are 2 black boxes mounted on the air box one is the cdi box and the other is the smart carb box. You would have to get a set of carbs change them out and properly tune them. The wiring for them I believe you could leave just unhooked. If you find out anything different let me know. I just bought a set of carbs on ebay haven't put them on yet.

I did this same thing to my 600 smartcarb. If I rember rite the box that have the green plugs is the smartcarb box. I just unpluged all the plugs from the box. If you dont you will get a light flashing on the dash. I cant rember if the smartcarb wiring is tyed in to the main harnes but I do no that I puled it out when I put the motor in a nother sled. As for the carbs you have options. they made them with 3 different sizes 34, 36 and 38. I dont no what years are wich but I do no the 34s came on the 500. The only difference is the bore, the bodys are the same. If you have any more ? dont be afrade to ask.

Our smart carbs aon or 97 venture 600 have been nothing but reliable, so far. I hear is any of the solenoids or sensors go, then they get to be a pain, but we have had no issue with that yet.
Do you think you are getting worse mpg from them? We are flatlanders as well. I think the smart carbs help with temp swings to keep it running right.
You know, on that 97 600, that yamaha had huge issues with the oil pumps, right? we just replaced ours and it runs like a champ. Before, the oil pump had failed open like the 97 600's did, and it ran like crap from time to time. If you have not updated to the new oil pump design, I would in a heartbeat. And it could very well be what you issue is, and not the smart carbs....

If it uses a lot of oil and fouls plugs I bet that is your culprit. Also, it will smoke like hell if the oil pump is shot. Even a used 98+ 600 twin oil pump will be fine as they cleared up the issue by going to another vendor.
A new updated pump is like 175 dollars from the dealer. I know because I just bought one

Is the oil pump the same on a 700 Vmax? or have the same issues anyway. I dont foul plugs, but it loads up fast when idling. Was considering a rejet, but if thats the problem I dont want to do that.

No, that is a different part # for the 700's. But you never know, it may be bad, but I doubt it.
Have you checked or adjusted the oil pump?
