So my '98 VMAX 700 was making a funny squeaking noise at idle. It sounded like it was coming from the primary clutch, so I pushed on the belt just a little and it stopped, when I let go it started again. So I shut it off, put on the spare belt and it went away... For a day... Now it's back, not as bad as before, but still there.
Now the first belt was the original, so it has around 4000 miles on it. The second one has never been used, but it's been sitting in the spare holder for the whole time. This may be a dumb question,
but do you think it is just old belts? Or is there some buildup on the clutch that is causing the noise?
Any thoughts would be appreciated....
Mike

clean the clutch with brake clean and a scotch brite pad. then wipe off with soap and water. 4K on a belt is a long time. if the other belt is 10 years old i would toss that one as well. belts will dry out over time. go buy some new ones.

Check your belt deflection as well.
I had to remove the shims on the secondary on our 97 venture 600 when we added a new belt. No more squeaky belt now. 20 minutes and no dollars
