Friend of mine's sled. It doesn't seem to hold its prime. Have to put gas down the cylinders to get it to start, even after sitting only one day. Any common issues on these that cause something like this?
 
My 97 venture 600 with smart carbs has not yet had this problem. Granted I only bought it before last season, but it has 6000 miles on it now.

It may be the fuel pump, or leaky hoses. The smart carb portion only adjusted jetting, and the rest of the carbs are really not any different than the std non smart carbs.
 
Thanks for the info. I didn't think it was anything to do with the smart carbs, just trying to explain what model it is. I was hoping you would see this post since you seem to know quite a bit about these sleds. It has another problem too. It is real doggy off the bottom end, and pops and backfires just off idle. Carbs have been cleaned, even tried jetting down the pilots. I just read your other post about the oil pumps on these, really wondering now if that's the issue with the poor bottom end performance. Called and asked friend if it went through lots of oil, he said now that he thought about it it did seem to use quite a bit. His wife has a new sled now so this one hasn't been rode this year, but his dad is interested in buying it if he can get these issues cleared up.

Thought I'd throw the losing prime question out there, in case these had a common issue there.
 
check the choke plungers, make sure the springs arent stuck. you can file 1mm off the tips to add more fuel to the starting circuit(yamaha service bulletin). also, look at the oxy fuel switch, tps, and the pressure sensor for the smart carbs. those motors had issues at around 3000 miles loosing pistons. i assume the crank seals are good?

I figured as much regarding that the smart carbs were added to the title just for more info. I do see all too often that folks blame the smart carbs first for other issues.


Check the oil consumption out, and also find out when it had a carb sync performed. I would also really inspect the fuel lines, as rubber can get old and crack. Plus, that is the cheapest fix;)

These 97 600 twins did have piston ring locator pin issues, but when that happens, it is very drastic, and you know something went south bad. piston rings that snag on cylinder ports tend to stop a motor dead, and mess up all the internals in the process.
