so over the summer the mice thought itd be a fantastic idea to chew through my fan belt probably 90% of the way on my 92 phazer II. i started it up last month and took it in the heated shop to go through the carbs. i did and didnt notice the fan belt deal until it was too late. i screwed up the clutch side jug and piston since it was gettin HOT! took the jugs off and realized the stupid rod was slightly bent... how, im not too sure, it didnt sieze up at 5,000 rpm.. i was losing power so i slowed to a stop and when i stopped, the engine did too. is that enough to bend a rod?? also when i pulled the heads off i could still turn the engine over by hand.. i havent done much work with 2strokes so idk what it takes to bend a rod.. the worst part of the whole ordeal is that engine doesnt have 500 miles on it :o|

so this is what i was thinking.. since the sleds not worth much in the first place, just try find a cheap good used engine.. $2-300 tops is what i was thinking. i figured id have a decent amount of time and money by the time i took the jug(s) in to have them fixed the right way, finding a different crank, pistons, gaskets... just taking a chance with a cheap engine would be worth it for what it is.

Well i start lookin on ebay and found what appeared to be a good choice.. 91 phazer II engine with 1900 miles on it and good compression. started at $100, nobody bid on it the first cpl days. i forgot about it and yesterday i checked it with a cpl hours left.. anyways it ended up going for $518!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FOR A USED 18 YEAR OLD ENGINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!it was also 80 for shipping so its basically $600!! i could not believe it, thats absolutly rediculous to me, sorry if the person who willingly got ripped off is here..and congrats if the person who sold it is here too.. but that iss just waaay too much. its not that good of an engine/sled to be spending that kind of money..

sorry im done ranting now, looks like im gonna do a halfa** job and replace or do something with the one jug and piston, and put it back together and run it.

wow i got 2 new engines sitting on the bench with new top ends & acid dipped clyinders.things look brand new excluding the dirty heads..& there fresh over bores.i should put them on there..thats crazy..but then again over time i probably got that in the crank seals gaskets & boring & new wiseco's..find the right person though you can get a whole running phazer for that price.good luck to yeah bro.

Check Craigslist, I saw quite a few phazer and engines starting at 150 up to 850.

I have a few jugs and heads goin gon an Ebay auction right now, if I knew your deal before I put them there you could have hav ethem for cheap. I think the yare only at 10 bucks and it will end sunday, I have a fan belt and fan if you need one.

Hope you can get it going soon. Did you ever check the muffler ? Make sure he did not build a nest there also...Check and take apart as much as you can to make sure that when you fix it you wont have another rodent problem....

Good Luck

Nick

heres a few pics. idk what to think about that rod.. i know its not good, but i cant say 100% that the guy that rebuilt it didnt put it in there when he did it.

If you have an set of extra crappy pistons, head and Jug I will say try it out, but I don't think it would work, I will get a new rod just to be safe at this point, you know you will be :o| if you rebuild it and it blows again because of that rod.....Just my 2 cents....

I found a 500 Spirit motor on e-bay for my Vintage 1976 Pantera 5000.I blew the piston on the mag side, damaged cylinder.Went to Artic Cat dealer and they wanted like $600 for that cylinder.I bought OEM pistons and rings that cost me $300. I tried looking for a used cylinder..no luck. Then one day on e-bay a guy was selling a re-built 500 Spirit motor for $450.00. He said he re-built it for his El Tigre, but never put it in because the sled was in bad shape. Was sitting on a shelf for 2 years, and never started it.It was all fogged so rust wouldn't take place.
I figured I would take a chance and purchase it..what the hell. Shipping to me was $150 yet on top of it. I am in Winnipeg,Canada and this motor was from Idaho. So $600 here, had already $300 for the pistons and rings at home which will be spares now. That is $900 now.Plus I had to purchase a few more things for clutch rebuild,belt,..etc.I now have at least $1100 into it.Main thing is that the motor runs, clutches are good.He sent me an extra clutch with the motor and extra carbs which I didn't use. I don't ride that sled much, but just wanted to get it back into working order to see if it could be possible.Sled is in real good shape with only 2800 miles on it.Got the sled from my wife's uncle. I could of spent the $$$ on something else, but when I put my mind to something..I try to finish it.I am still breaking that motor in.

yeah, i dont disagree, thats the best way to go... but at the same time, where does it stop? just a new rod, the cranks gotta go to a shop that can put one in. then i could just as well have both jugs bored or sleeved, new pistons.. it all adds up, and in the end its just a 485 fan phazer thats 17 yrs old. i know all too well of getting too deep into a project, i restored a '67 chevelle (avatar pic) and i went through absoluutly EVERYTHING on that, it all adds up. esp when we just spent a decent amount in having ithe phazer rebuilt 500 miles ago, it needed a diff engine there as well.. so..

just put your money into a newer sled if that one is not worth it anymore.

At that point it isn't quite as ridiculous.

I personally think that parts on older sleds should be less $$ than a comparable part on a newer machine. But then I guess that would cause less new sleds to be bought... You can't win, but I hate seeing prices for a single part on an older sled cost somewhere around half of what the entire sled is worth...

Well, I went through similar deal last year. Lost the motor on my wifes 93 Phazer2 & the parts cost was going to be close to $700 with the crank.
So, I found a complete 94 Phazer2 for $900.
Bought it, swapped parts from her motor to that one, electric start etc and installed it & then parted out the balance of the 94. Why I kept the 93 over 94 was the 94 was not as clean & straight.

In the end, I might have $300 in the different motor since I have sold a number of parts from the 94.

If ya got the time, place & a few $$$ you work with, its not a bad option.
I figure by the time I liquidate the balance of the the parts from the 94, this motor will be close to free, not counting the labor of course. That was just good old fun!!! LOL !!

There is a Phazer in the MPLS area Craigs listing:
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/rvs/979667049.html

They are asking $425...hey who knows. Check it out or whatever CL area works for you. Sometime ya can get a good deal there!! ;)!

Good luck & based on the look of that piston..I would be checking why that piston leaned out like it did. And I would NOT try to use that rod again. It will not last long...if at all...IMO.

I have the number to guy with one for sale for $400, it had pistons and rings put in it last year. Oh its a 91 and locted near Northbranch.

I saw it yesterday on my way to buy a mint 96 in Harris MN.

I am looking for a phazer II chassis with a bas motor if you decide to sell.
