I've got a similar problem to horkn as my sled back-fires. It doesn't idle properly either. However if I leave the choke half-way on it seems to run fairly descent. Any ideas? Possibly weak fuel pump? It ran 100% just a week ago, last time out. Thanks for any input.

Mine runs fine now....although it never backfired, it just used a lot of oil, and then it ran like it was on one cylinder, even thoughthe ignition was never an issue.
It needed a new updated design oil pump, and the screw that connects the throttle shaft from 1 carb to the other fell out, and it needed a carb sync after that. So while I had 2 carbs, only the left cylinder's carb slide was operating. The other one was basically thinking it was idling. It runs like a champ now.
To me it sounds like you need a carb cleaning.

Sounds like the carbs need to be cleaned. Lean pilots make them back fire while running. And a high idle will make them back fire starting or turning them off.
And re-reading your post confirms my thoughts. The choke is richening the pilot circuit. Clean the carbs before you have bigger problems like burnt pistons.

yes, I filled the tank before I started it, maybe the problem. I've put 50mi on it prior to this and the sled ran perfect. But will pull the carbs and clean just to be sure. Thanks for the replies.

Add isoproyl acohol (heat)to the fuel tank. That will get rid of the water if any in the tank.
If it ran great, then a refuel made it run poor, you have to assume it is bad gas.

Except that the choke makes it run better. I've never experienced bad gas in my sled but does turning on the choke help that? Usually my bad gas chokes out others.horkn said:Add isoproyl acohol (heat)to the fuel tank. That will get rid of the water if any in the tank.

Most gas already has some ethanol in it so HEET is not needed. I think you are trying to get a rise out of a member on here that has a passion for HEET!

LMAO
I'm thinking I might just have to start a thread titled "How HEET saved my life" or "Why Citgo is the Best Oil Ever Made"
clean the carbs and re jet it. to stop the back firing before you shut it off let it idle down for 30, 40 seconds.

I forgot about the choke making it run better.

No I actually did not try to awaken the HEET Meister.

I have not had to add HEET for some time due to our oxygenated fuels. that is one plus from that.

That and I will heed your warning of your personal bad gas choking others out.
