Hello, I know this really is not for this board, but Maybe someone can lend a hand, as my brother and I want to go on a long ride tonight....He has a 1988 polaris indytrail 500 with 1900 miles....he was saying today, all of a sudden, when he hits the throttle, it goes up to 7000 rpm, before the sled starts moving, and he is smelling a burning smell, he says it smells like a burning belt....Now he did advise that the belt feels loose on the sheaves, but its been running fine until today...my question is, what would be the first thing we should look at? what would cause this to go to 7000 rpm before the sled takes off, once you get going, it runs fine, its just gettting started, and what other parts, would smell like a burning belt? Im not to familar with these things, nor what to look for...I thank you, Pete
Was the ebrake on? track frozen? Is the track locked up, ect. Does it happen evertime the sled stops and starts again? I would check the clutch for wear and also wear on the belt, the smell is probable belt burning. Did the clutch get oil or fuel on the sheaves?

good question
I can ask him...he was riding for about two hours, and was riding fine....then as he was riding, he started to smell alittle burning, stoped the sled, started to ride back, and now whenever he comes to complete stop, before the sled moves, it goes up to 7000 rpm...once it hits the 7000rpm, it runs fine,,,its as long as he does not come to a complete stop....im gonna help him look at it tonight..im not too sure how to work on those old polairs sleds...I would imagine the belt comes off the sheaves like my vmax...also, not sure how he checks chaincase oil on his sled....we have a long ride planned tonight. I advised him to cancel the ride.. but he said it is fine, and is being stoburn about it..hehe
