Just got a 1997 venture 500 L/C for my daughter and I. The oil light comes on at @ 85 miles!!!!. I noticed the oil pump picks up off idle with the throttle--on other brands I have had there is some slack in the cable and the pump won't pick up until @ 1/4 throttle. I guess my question is --how far can I back this pump off? Also what is the peak eng RPM on the 500?

There is an adjustment of the oil pump, there is a mark that has to line up at full throttle. 97's had an oil consumption issue when new I took mine back to the dealer for an adjustment. You want to make sure what ever you do is correct. If you have access to a service manual for your sled it show how to adjust the oil pump.

Kinda new to the yammi two strokes. I have a Rx1 with 8k on it and put 10's of thousands of miles on previous cats. I guess I'll back it off bit by bit. My old ZRT800 never picked the pump up until 1/4 throttle--and I put 10k on that thing!!

You will probably need a new oil pump. Those pumps wears prematurely and cause high oil consumption. The pump was replaced under warranty on my 1997 500 and the replacement went bad too. On pump number three now.

What is the peak RPM of this motor? Mine turns @8100-8200. Upon further inspection it seems that the bracket is bent that holds the cable--never letting it return to the idle position. I'll bend it back, adjust and report back

Someone here said the 500's had no issues with the 500cc oil pumps in 97, but if you look up the fiche for this, you will see a part is superceded for the original 500 as well as the 96 600 twin.
And I know for a fact the 97 600 twins had issues with the oil pumps. They had all the pumps on the 600s have a poor design, and I bet the same is for the 500's.
A new one for my 600 was like 175 dollars.... but it was $$ well spent.

no issues with 500 that i know of,but hey never know
first thing you could do is check your oil pump setting;
with engine off hold the throttle wide open and look down @ your oil
pump and see if your marks are lined up,post back.
then we can set TEP and readjust pump..
Peak rpm is 7800 on that millstain said:What is the peak RPM of this motor? Mine turns @8100-8200. Upon further inspection it seems that the bracket is bent that holds the cable--never letting it return to the idle position. I'll bend it back, adjust and report back

Well I've adjusted the pump so lines are about 1/8 inch apart at full throttle and I'm still using about 1 qt. of oil every 70 miles. Looks like time for a pump

Yeah, before the line--ugh!! I also need to get my rpm's down--this thing will see 8200 on long stretches. Anyone have a weight # I can use?

It should not be over revving if everything is working okay. You should not have to change from stock components. Either there is a problem in the drive or driven or someone has made changes in the system somewhere.

I agree, but let's start with the belt that is on there.
Assuming everything else is OK, the belt could be worn. How old is the belt on there?

Well after going down to the dealer and reading all the service manuals I replace my oil pump and added 3grams of tip weight to my primary arms for a total of 48 grams. It still will pull @8100 at full shift out across the lake but is right at the top of the spec according to service manual. I have ck'ed all clutch components and all are in spec. I have a hard time believing something is worn as this sled runs and shifts strong for a 500. I must say that I am impressed with this little 500--it is by far the strongest non-powervavle 500 I have ever ridden.

Yeah, the 600s were notorious for this (and snagging rings), the 5s not so much, but they had the same supplier/ design of the oil pump as the 97s.
