Hey,
I have a 98 700 srx mountain with a 600 srx motor in it. The crank was welded and the piston and rings replaced. The sled has been running with no flaws up until last week. I went out west with it rode 2 days and on the 3rd day started losing power and there was a clunking noise on the number 1 cylinder by the primary clutch shut it down. And started it back up it started right up but the noise was still there. Pulled all the plugs and checked compression was all the same across all 3 cylinders. Clutch seemed to have a bit more freeplay movement up and down. Not sure if the clutch could make such a noise or thinking maybe spun an outer bearing. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated before I rip into the motor. thnks bummed out...

are you sayin the clutch has play back and forth when you turn it by hand ?? or up and down play .....i had my chain tensioner loosen up once and had lots of play.and was clunking ..check to see if tensioner is loose
Its freeplay up and down..

grabbing at the face of the clutch(leverage), or at the rear?yammiR1 said:Its freeplay up and down..
grabbing it at the face of the clutch it will move up and down. The motor will spin freely wont seize up and just quit running. I shut it off after it started to lose the power. At first was thinking it was just a fouled plug. Couldnt hear the noise right away... Still had good compression on all 3 cylinders as well..

Clutch should not move up, down, forward, or backward.....you have a problem if it is.
Your talking internally then right? with the motor. Could I have spun an outside bearing or do you think its something with the crankshaft? I can pull on the rope and it pulls over you can turn clutch and it spins freely the sled will actually start and run but just has that clunk noise. Probably wont no anything unless I break it down huh??

Free play is no good as others say.
Pull the clutch off and start to go from there. There is a good possibility that the bearings went, there is alot of tension on the bearings when the clutch engages and when doing mountain riding(climbing), How many miles are on the motor?
If it is just the clutch end bearings that are bad replace them and put seals on both ends of the crank and put her back into service. Good luck.

The miles on the motor itself are unknow as the hood is off a different 600 srx. The kid told the motor was redone and I talked with the mechanic who did the work. Said he sent out the crank to have the update done on it then put all new bearings seals and rings and pistons were done as well. I was told since it was overhauled it had only been run locally maybe 3 to 4 tanks of fuel run through it..Could there be a bad bearing inside the motor and still run without seizing up or is it just the outside bearing righ after the clutch??where the heads come together. Is it possible to pull off the clutch and try to run to see how it sounds or does it act as a balance for internal parts.. Just curious.. Thanks....
