Bare with me this is the first time working on jetting. Got a 1994 v-max 2 yrs ago. When I bought it it was very rich but I ran it that way. I seemed to have a dead spot on mid range. Plugs are always black and usually wet. I put new in about every 5 rides because they foul out. Well now that I am feeling comfortable with working on the sled I dug into the jetting.
First I adjusted throttle cable to spec then the oil cable to spec and that was way out. Way to much oil consumption. I pulled the carbs off to check out the jetting because 2 owners ago the sled had pipes and a Tempa-Flow on it. The Tempa-flo is gone and the pipes are gone and basicly back to stock.
Jetting went as follows.
Main Jet was 165
Pilot Jet was 50
Left air screw 1.5 out
Right air screw 2 out

I looked in the manual and I was looking to go back to stock. 52.5 pilot and 156.3 main.
Local shop did not have them so I stayed with the 50 pilot because I read the sleds are rich from the factory.
I did order a couple main jets. 157 and one bigger and one smaller to try.

While I wait for them I put in the 50 pilot jet and started to set up the carbs with the air screw at 1-1/8 turn out.
Stared the motor let it warm up.
Set the idle at 2000 rpms
then backed out the air screws so the motor raced up to around 2500rpm and I was out 2 full turns.

Is 2 turns out to much? It seems to run better and revs quicker. I let it run for a bit on a stand and checked the plugs and it seems to not be as black or wet like it use to.

What are others jetted on 94 v-max? I am in michigan and around 1000ft level.
Mains should be here in a couple of days and I want to work on it this weekend. Whats the best way to check the main jets? I think I need to get the motor up to temp and run it WOT and then kill it and pull the plugs? Tell me if im wrong?
Thanks sorry for the long read.

2000 idle i think is kind of high..start somewhere around 153's & go up in the jetting..leaner the meaner..

thanks, Yes 2000rpm is to high. Normally it is around 1500rpm. Service manual said to tune the carbs by setting the air screw then warm the engine. Then to adjust the throttle stop screw until the engine is at 2000-2500rpm then slowly loosen the pilot screw which I think is the air screw? do that until the engine rpm goes up. Then you set the idle speed at 1500rpm.
