So last season I rebuilt my top end (pistons, rings, etc...) due to some pretty serious damage to the right side piston and head. After the rebuild I ran straight gas and synthetic oil in the reservoir and took it real easy for the first 20-30 miles. That's about all the further I made it before she died. I was riding close to my house and was on my way back to the to do a plug chop and see how they looked. After I drug the sled back the house and pulled the plugs the right side plug was dry and bent. Pulled the head off and sure enough the same cylinder blew. After pulling the jugs I found the bottom end (crank bearing) was gone and blew up into the combustion chamber.
My question is what are the possible causes for this??? The left cylinder looked perfect and had a nice light coating of oil throughout. I was thinking maybe the fuel pump but I'm really not sure. I cleaned the carbs during the first re build so I don't THINK that is the issue.
I have already pulled the oil tank and am going to pre-mix from now on(just not worth it in my opinion). I also bought a used crank in working order as opposed to trying to rebuild the grenade d one.
I have also decided to make the switch to a 600 and have found used jugs and bought a wiseco top end kit. I THINK I only need to re-jet the carbs and everything else should bolt right up...right???
Thanks for your help!

did you bleed the oil pump good?? that's strange the '96 had a reliable
pump no issues..
i would stay with oem pistons if i were you,100% better in a stock trail
sled,for longevity

Thanks for the OEM suggestion Daman... first time I have heard that.
As far as switching to pre-mix has anyone done this on this model sled?? Curious as to what to do with the oil pump etc...
Thanks!

No problem,on this site we use OEM in stock/bore trail sleds, for longevity, they last way longer..
i would keep the pump, run premix in the tank and watch the bottle to go down telling you it's working, get a new/used pump...

Def would check and replace both crankseals

Probably a bad crank seal on that side.
Since you are rebuilding the top and bottom you will replace all cranks seals and such anyway.

ok... so I'll definately be changing the crank seals and going with OEM pistons. I think I'm stuck on pre-mixing from here on out as I really dont stray more than 30-40 miles away from my house. (I ride in Maryland) Anyone know of write up on removing and plugging off all necessary oil hook ups for the pre-mix change?
Thanks!
Thanks!
