I am looking at a 600 SX with a 144 2" paddle track with 1" drilled holes for clearing snow. Is drilling the holes good? Does it weaken the track significantly? This would be a replacement sled for my son's Phazer II which was a 136" with 1" studs. He loves to play in the powder.

Some sleds are being sent out from the factories with drilled tracks now. Strength in the track should be fine.

the big sleds up in the mountains with the huge HP numbers use them. the only real drawback is if water skipping is your thing. they are like holes in a boat.

This is my ported track. Done last year; now with over 600 miles of mountain riding on it and NO problems.

ported tracks are pretty common, i wouldnt worry about it. they usually drop a couple pounds of rotating mass and free up some rolling resistance....

Not to mention all the extra weight in snow that you carry around without a ported track. I haven't seen a ported track fail yet, although they seem to stretch a little like a new track does after being ran for a bit. Tighten them up a little once and don't seem to stretch after that. Should be fine as long as holes are drilled in the middle of the track, I've heard you don't want one that has been drilled on the outside of the windows.

I just put a ported 156 on my mtn viper, and have had no problems. Make sure you take it to someone who has maybe done it before. the guy that did mine had a couple different hole saws that he had ground all the teeth off and made them razor sharp. he had a peace of wood he used for a template, and ended up putting 2 holes in the middle and one hole in each outside section total of 4 holes. I would definitely do it again on another track. the track will stretch a lot if you put the holes too close to the drive section of the track(where the drivers hook up)

Most of your riding is still groomed trail right? It wont take long to destroy that 2inch track with aggressive trail riding not to mention the fact that has been weakened by those holes. hardpack puts alot more load on a track than the boys out west in the powder. Not trying to rain on your party, but you could always try it and change the track if it dosnt work out.
