97 VMax 600 XTC. One cylinder just doesn't want to fire. I bought a compression tester yesterday. Please tell me proper way to test compression and what values I should expect. Theres about 3500 miles on it.

take plugs out of both cylinders (important to do so you don't get a false reading) and test them by holding throttle wide open and pulling it over probably 5 or 6 times

If you have a big desparity in psi from one sylinder to the next, it needs a rebuild of some sort.

If the cylinders are much more than 5psi in difference plan on a rebuild as well.

A leak down tester it the best way to check engine health, but a compression tester will give a quick answer. I will be doing an compression test ona used mxz for a buddy that will probably buy that sled as long as it checks out.

fwiw, those 97 600 twins had issues with the piston ring locator bushings falling out and the rings rotating and then snagging on the ports and grenading...

The same buddy who probably will buy that mxz today rides with a guy with 2 97 vmax 600's. One just went down with 30 psi in one cylinder, and like 120 in the other..... That tells me Yamaha did not fix all of these yet. There was some sort of bulletin, and Yamaha fixed a lot of these 600's including ours, but these still pop up even 12 years later. The friends/ friends 600 has around 3500 miles on it too.
