BTW my stock airbox is cracked on the bottom side

I would stick with the air box. It is set up to draw cool outside air. The K&N's will draw hot, underhood air. And some air boxes will increase performance, don't know about that one in particular. You may need to change jetting with the K&N's.

You could also weld the box or patch it.
