Hi all, and thanks for all the good reading so far.
I'm a rookie this year and have been reading all the posts I can. I bought a 2002 viper sx 700 this season. I was out on Sunday and after about 15km, my warning light and temp started flashing. I didn't notice any difference in the flashing times. After stopping at a buddies for a bit, he checked things over for me and didn't see anything obvious (coolant level, heat exchanger) we headed out and it was good for about 3km then started flashing again. I slowed down and when I came up to where he was waiting for me, it wasn't flashing anymore and didn't do it again the rest of the night. I went out today and it would come on periodically then go off again. I read about the possibility of it being the grip or thumb warmers so when it came on tonight, I shut them off. It never came on again even though I turned them back on when my hands got cold and rode for another hour. When I was out on Sunday, I did have to turn down my thumb warmer because my thumb was actually HOT even at half on the dial. I'm thinking that it is probably it but would like some other opinions. If that is it, what and where should I be looking for the problem? Thanks.

Same Problem with both my Vipers. Installed the a rear heat exchanger on both and no more heating problems. Just make sure the air is evacuated from the exchangers or it will airlock and overheat.
thanks for the reply mikefras, but I really don't think it is an overheating problem. Wouldn't it be a steady light instead of flashing? and wouldn't it be more consistent? I went out tonight and it came on once after 10 km. I counted 3 flashes, but I could have missed some before I noticed. I slowed down a bit to try and count, but it went out and never came back, so I'm not really sure. I put my hand and thumb warmers to the max and ran another 1/2 hour at around 90km/h on hardpack?

does the engine/coolers seem hot to the touch when it's starts flashing?

try to get us a flash pattern.dice_jay said:nope. warm, not hot, not cold.
never really got a repeating series of flashes except once. it was 8 flashes, 1 repeat. after that, I had 7 flashes, a bit later, 6 flashes, later, 2 flashes, then no more flashes the rest of the trip? Never a consistent series? I heading out for a day trip tomorrow, so hopefully all goes well. It never started flashing until I got into some deep virgin snow and had it blowing under my hood. Maybe moisture in the wiring harness?
well, turned back after 25km today.Temp light coming on and going off. After a few times, I stopped and opened the hood and wiggled the wires and the light goes off, so I'm going to check the wires over. Had the 8 flash repeat today too, I read that was a bad water sensor/wire. Would a sensor do it random like that or more likely the wires? From what I've read on here, the vipers have a lot of issues that way. Also had some air in the coolant. I will make sure the system is well bled too. One other thing I noticed today is that the warning light and engine light flash once. I thought the temp light flashed before?

Just my 2 cents, kinda sounds like a rub through on a wire, I have read post on here about similar problems. Maybe do a search under wiring harness rub through ?.
I think you may be right sickrick. I went out and checked over the wires and found one bundle pinched between the recoil and the coolant hose. I got it out and checked it over. All the tape is worn off. I didn't see any of the wire insulation worn through, but it is hard to see without pulling off the coolant jug. After pulling that out, I went out and did 45km without a single warning flash. Is it the temp icon or the engine icon that is supposed to flash once at start up after the instrument check? the engine light flashes once.
