Been trying to search a bit on the forum here but have had no real luck finding anything with substantial results - I have a 96 500 xt that is horrible on fuel - more so than these sleds are already known for (4.5 - 5 mpg) Carbs have been cleaned every year before riding, maintenance has been done by a Yamaha service manager each year.
Is there anything I can do to try and get this thing to run 8-9-10 mpg? It does seem to run rich. Would leaning it out by changing the clip position do me any good or is it just a waste of time?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

your milage will never be very good. Changing the needle clip position, (lower the needle, raise the clip) will lean down the midrange, better check your plugs. i had the best luck changing the mains on our 600. still wasnt very good, but i got 8-9 on a regulas basis.

Usualy leaning them out is the soltuion but make sure to watch the plugs as was mentioned. I got about 12-13mpg this weekend on the 600 so you should be able to get up a ways

Make sure the clutches are in good shape. We had a 94 500 that never got over 7mpg. The 95 500 I just sold would do 10-11 all day long.

Lower your needles, these sleds are supre fat in the midrange. My 95 600 sees 12 mpg on a bad day and 15mpg on a good day.

Is there a spot on here that shows a how to or does anyone have any tips? I thought I saw a carb diagram showing this but can't seem to find it. Do the carbs need to be removed to get this done?

no, you should be able to pull off the caps on the top of the carbs, and run a long allan head down with a light and pull the slides, carefull to not drop anything in the hole. then raise the clip. on our 600 i ran 155s here in south east s.d., switched to 145 in the black hills.
