HI everyone,
I usually purchase my gas here in NJ and we have 10% Ethanol in our gas. I always run 93 octane, and have never put in anything less. However I have read many threads about gas quality. Are all SRX/Viper engines doomed as a result of ethanol? Is there a way to combat this? Any ideas?

Thanks,
Zack

Here is the deal, if you want to do wot pulls and are running your jets on the ragged edge, your going to have problems with ethanol....Now I am not saying, that this is set in stone, but ethanol is not going help the equation!!! If I have to get gas and thats the only thing available, I guess I am going to have to use it. I also will run it if I know that the high octane fuel is old!!! But then I stay out of the throttle!! I also am jetted a little on the rich side!

they make and sell e-10 stabilizers that help prevent the separating of the ethanol. there is a product around here k-100 and they claim to make water burn. by they way donot add drygas to the sled theres enough alchol in there for a lifetime already.

Ethanol boost's octane so it in and of itself is not likely to cause you to run lean. Ethanol does not carry as many BTU as gasoline so it will cause you to make less power.

blue missle is right - K-100 and products like it will "absorb/bond" with the water in your tank and make it flammable - the reason is because these products contain ether - the paradox is that ethers (mtbe) are exactly what ethanol replaced because the ethanol producers spent alot of money convincing the american public that ethers are carcinogens (when they are not - mtbe is actually administered to gall bladder patients!) - so lets spend $1.50 per gallon to produce ethanol and replace ether that we can make for $.30 per gallon and turn around and sell the public ether in a small bottle at $1.00 an ounce to combat the ill effects of the ethanol!!! - makes sense to me!! - sorry, but ethanol is a sore subject with me!! - save yourself some money and go to the paint store and buy some toulene - about $8 a gallon right now - toulene and ether are the two main components in your best octane boosters (Amsoil) and it bonds with water very simularly to ether!! ;)!

Ethanol does not bond with water - it attaches to it and once it attaches too much, it separates - ethers on the other hand do bond with the water molecules to become one - hence no seperation - that is why the new stabilizers for E10 are ethers!! - get out your chemistry book!!

So ethanol is more of a leach...does not change the property of water..just grabs it, and takes it along ???

Chemistry was not a high point of schooling. #$%&*

I'm just an old gearhead that knows how to make thousands of horsepower out of 1 engine. ;)!

That's not a bad thing!! - think of the molecules of ethanol and water as bubbles - they merely attach to each other kind of like a ballon sticks to the wall when you rub it on your head - however, water molecules are heavier than ethanol molecules so when enough water molecules attach to the ethanol, they get too heavy for the ethanol and they separate - ether molecules on the other hand actually combine with the water molecules to become one - they never separate - we will have a test on this tomorrow!!! LOL!! :jump:

Seriously, e10 is just fine. Just be sure to watch your jetting. If you run it jetted absolutely perfectly with no room for error, and do WOT all the time, you probably will burn up.

Jet 2 sizes richer than what you are running if you are leaner than stock, or if at stock jetting, you will be fine already.

I have been running e10 for at least 15 years with no issues in any of our motors, be it car sled, weedwacker jet ski 2 stroke 4 stroke 6 stroke;).

Also, watch your fuel filter. on a sled that has seen some miles, the ethanol will clean the gas tank, and that could rob fuel to the motor if the filter gets plugged.

solubility of water in ethanol is higher than you'll ever get before it starts to separate... (in your sleds' tank)...
Ethanol does raise octane number (which can reduce possibility of detonation) but at the same time oxygenates the fuel due to the functional alcohol group (0-H)... This creates a leaner fuel/air mixture but with slightly higher octane number.... If temps are cold and 10% ethanol is used, the lean mixture could negate the 93 octane number... (One can have a lean burn down with very high octane number)... Really only solution when using this fuel is jet up... across the board.... now I'm confused....

I think that spells it out quite well.

It's really as simple as that, if you are jetted on the ragged edge already, jet up.

That was the whole point of my post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least 2 of us know what we are talking about. There are a handful of states that are just now getting e10 and some folks want to condemn it as evil.

;)!

you use more get less, doesnt store well, makes you use it right away or it gos bad how is that not evil what agreat way to conserve and get moneys worth, oh i see job creating for repair shops

ok, use more, well, I have yet to see a drop in mpg on my sleds since the switch, but I do notice it does get a little less mpg in my suv.

Does not store well, ok, true
If you add stabil to it, it does not go bad, and also, it takes a few weeks for it to degrade.

it runs cleaner supposedly, but it does not allow icing to happen. Ever since the switch, I have yet to hear of anyone's carbs icing up. Icing was common years ago though, especially in temps like we have been having.

I have still to see any repairs necessary by running it. Ok, a fuel filter or 2 at worst.

It is not evil, just different. I have learned to live with it. Pretty much everyone else will have to as well at some point.

Where is the gas filter on my 2000 SRX? I have yet to find one, or for that matter change one.

I can contest to a serious fuel milage drop with the "E" ! Noticed in my Superhawk, Silverado and especially the Viper !

where i work in less then a month weve had to dump (customers fuel)around 185 gallons ,its not like the old days were if water in fuel you could remove it and all is good ,today if water is in fuel its all bad, when the water which can come from hummidity, through vent gets in fuel and bonds with crapinal it drops to bottom of tank, where all vehicles get there fuel to run, so when that happens your engine will be running on water soaked crapinal , and fuel above has low octane, in four stroke it may run but rough in 2 stroke water and oil dont mix very good and you will take out your motor there is no good reason for crapinal, as for cleaning if that was case i wouldnt be cleaning more carb than ever before, with the clear jelly that forms in them ,as for iceing that only happens this time of year, and there additives you could buy for that that worked well, as for (lottery juice ,merical in abottle)stabilizers dont do anything that ive seen, ive had customers that use it religously and have had the same problem, plus alot of thoughs have alcohol in them which you dont need more of when you already have enough crapinal, ive had customers whos fuel went bad in weekend ! crapinal is pure evil!
