I know not a Yamaha.
I picked up a 93 Indy 440 for the kids in really good shape. The suspension is set real stiff. Any information on setting this sled up would be great.

That is in the evolved chassis, correct?

We have a 94 indy500 efi, but we don't have anyone that is young that rides.

I guess first, take a look at the preload adjusters on the rear skid. These will be a 3 or a 4 position block. Lower it down to the lowest on both sides unless the kids are bigger.. A screwdriver will work if there is no ice.

Then, in the front, there will be like 7 or so spring settings in front. See where those are.

Check the suspension for grease. Maybe it could use some? Polaris have always had a ton of grease zerks on them.

Also, shortly after we got our indy500, we put a rydeFX non rebuildable steel body shock on it. That made a HUGE difference in ride quality, and that same rear shock is in there after like 11-12 years of use.

the pre load adjusters are on stiffest setting...there seems to be two places where the rear shock can be bolted?
I am gonna remove the skid and check it out real close....I will have to look again at the fronts....not sure about the 7 or so setting you are describing....the first mod this sled is getting is yamaha bars.

I just put my son on our 92 Indy Trail and he is happy as happy can be. Those old Indy's are great machines. It has a newer Extra 10 skid in it. I love that sled and have a blast on it.

Yamy, I leave our indy5 on the 2nd stiffest preload for springs in back for my Mom, she is a probably 180 lbs or so (sorry mom). When I ride it, I bump it up to the stiffest, and i am 240lbs.

Yes, there are 2 shock mounting locations, but I wouldn't mess with that until you adjust the preload lower.

I am pretty certain that you should have different spring tension settings on the front.

Yami bars? Is it on the original wedge hood? If so, then i see why, if not, and it is the rounder type like our indy, the rocker switches for the hand and thumbwarmers (and ours has reverse too on the bars) would make it a bit more difficult to swap to yamaha bars.

Xtra-10 is the way to go on those sleds, pretty much a direct bolt in and salavge places are loaded with them. We just put a coupled style Xtra 10 in my buddies 91' 400 liquid along with my old .88 yokohama track and that turned it into an awesome trail cruiser.

it is the original wedge hood.....very weird shapped bars.. the rocker switch is located beside the ignition and choke above the right foot well...I looked at the wiring and I an confident i can make it work....did the rocker switch have three positions...off, medium and high. this one is either off or on....what is the difference from the xtra10 and the skid in therer now.

Ahh, I see. wedge. Go for it. The original bars on those were never my favorites.

If you saw a pic of the evolved body styles handlebars you would see what I mean.

Our 96 wedge xcr600 had high low and off, I think both hand and thumb were on the same switch. That was on the right, down by the key.

The original indy skid in there has like 8 inches of travel, and unlike the xtra 10 no limiter blocks to couple the skid, and allow you to dial in weight transfer. We have that still on the 94 500.

The xtra 10 has a true 10 inches, and can be very compliant or very stiff. It's a very good skid. Steer clear of the xtra 12. It's not a bad skid, but it certainly is not as good as a skid as the xtra 10. Also, the xtra 12 may need some serious tweaking to make it handle and ride right with a shorter travel front suspension. Our 96 xcr600 was the first year of xcr to get the xtra 10, and it had the old non xtra 10 front suspension. That sled handled great.

If you are going to pull the old skid out, you might as well get an extra 10 for it. That way you should have better shocks, and a better ride regardless. The next time I pull the skid on the 500, I will probably swap an xtra 10 in. it is literally bolt in. I bet you can get a nice xtra 10 for 150 or so. A better rear shock for the old skid would be around 75-80 dollars.
