may be a stupid question but what controls your RPM on a 600cc engine?
I am trying to get my head around a problem I have with rpm sticking at 5000 tops

well the sled has a swap out, was a 700 triple V Max but now has a 600 from an XTC (I bought this way, dummy I am). Runs very strong on low too mid range but has no top end. I had a dealer put the clutch back to stock and clean the carbs. they replaced the needle valve assembly and told me everything else checks out. New belt fresh springs on both prim and secondary, rollers etc. On very cold mornings I can get it too 5000 which gives me about 90kmhr. when I got the machine the speedo didn't work but it was the cables that were seized and not bad bearings. I have since changed the hyfax and adjusted the track and I think it's at the right tension (about 1 maybe 1-1/2" when up on my stand under some pressure) and centered.
I figure if I can find why the rpm is so low it is a breeze to fix the sled.
I still kind of wonder if it's in the clutch because it gets hot on the primary which means to me that the belt slips ie not enough weight to grab it, no pressure from the clutch might = low rpm.
I'm just getting back into sledding and as you can tell not the greatest mechanic. big lesson though is that stealerships only after I have really hit the wall.
sounds like your getting too much drag in the driveline somewhere, keeping the motor from winding out, bad bearings or maybe chain is way too tight, Hows it rev up with the belt off? make sure you have all 600 clutch components in there, springs flyweights ,etc.... check the sec. make sure its openning up all the way. Just trying to give you some idea's.

The hot clutches tell it all...you have something binding in the clutches or an extreme case of driveline drag. Any black marks being left on the primary or secondary sheaves?

No black marks per say but I can't put my hand on the clutch for my that a quick tap after running for a bit. I'll let you guys know shortly. Driveline is coming out today and I'll replace all the bearings etc.

might want to check the gearing changes from a 700 to a 600

sounds like geared to tall take magic marker draw line on primary from center out, go make some wot runs and see if whole line gets whiped off and make sure clutched for 600 they have different primarys and different secondarys you can change the helix and spring to stock on secoundary but dont know what spring and weights you would use on primary
