Hello All,

Dug my old ride from high school out this year and started riding it again.
Cost of modern sleds was killing me. Anyway here's my story and my problem.

1990 Phazer 2 bored to 499cc w wisecos, Boyseen reeds, Aaen pipe, and stiffer primary spring. This machine suffered from the mid range lean bog its whole life, and I couldn't figure it out as a teenager so I lived with it.
Now I read all about these new nozzles for fixing this symptom, but opted to install a set of Flatslides off a Vmax 600 instead of doing the carb mod.

Installed the flatslides and used the same mains I had in the stock carbs. (they are so old I can't read the numbers on them anymore- all I remember from my teen years was I jetted it 2 sizes up from stock for the pipe?).
With these mains installed in the flatslides it was too rich WOT. I had 6 hours to get it dialed in for our weekend tear, and could source every main jet but the one I thought I'd need (145's was the guess I thought I'd need)
So to get it running for the weekend I gutted the airbox.
Removed the big metal plate in it and used a hole saw to cut two 1.5inch holes into the plastic baffle plate (on either side of the 1 stock hole).
The machine never ran better! Awesome power throughout with no bog at all........ That is until I started breaking trail is really deep snow. With snow making its way under the hood, it would lose all kinds of power and start boggin at WOT while the engine sucked snow through the freshly gutted airbox and into the carbs.
I am almost certain this is what is happening. It does not appear to be a clutching issue and will pull the sled in the really deep stuff for about 10-15 seconds before it starts to suck snow in.

Is this what happens when you gut an airbox?
Should I just put the airbox back to normal and start jeting down.? (it will be a pain as I don't even know what jets to start with...)

Or would an outer wear over the snorkel help?
Is there any power to be gained from the gutted airbox anyway?

Any insight to phazer gurus out there would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jay
