hey i have a 2001 mountain max 600 and dont do much deep snow riding so i was wondering if i could cut the track down to have 1.5 inch lugs for a bit more speed. And if you can do this will it make a difference in durabitlity? and how would you go about doing it?

yep , you can do it , alot of hill climbers do it to make the lug harder ....two ways i know of but there are probaly many more ..1. cut a piece of wood to your desired height , then use a pair of horse nail trimmers ( any farm or tac shop will have them ) its like cutting warm butter and you can do it with the track installed ..2. make a piece of angle iron to you desired height and make it like 20 inches long .. just hold the angle iron up to the track lugs and with a propane torch heat up a carpet knife(box cutter) and go to town .....good luck

ok i was just out in the garage and made a 1.5 inch wooden block. i think ill use a utility knife to trim it down a half inch. but do u know how much those nail cutters would be? it seems to be alot easier to use them instead.
you've got a good start with the block, make it long enough. what i used to cut it was the old milwaukee sawzall with a metal cutting blade, it tends to heat the rubber up more and almost cotterize the ends to prevent tear out. thats just how we do it here, i'm all about power tools. just my $.02!!
