I installed an electric start from an ER on my standard '02 Viper. No issues with it starting and running.
At the end of the weekend after a run across the lake at WOT I shut it off. When I started it to put it on the trailer it sounded like the starter was occasionally engaging the starter ring, like one or two clicks not like "starting" a running motor.
Could something be slightly misaligned that would cause this? Perhaps something moved after running wide open, motor shift?
Is there an adjustment on the starter or does it need to be lubricated so that it will completely clear the ring gear when it retracts?
Thanks.

Starter
Installed one on my SXr and the starter drive should not contact the ring gear in Ign run position or Ign off. Check for loose ring gear ( 6 bolts behind clutch ) loose starter bolts , broken return spring in starter mtr or faulty relay
It came off a Viper it should fit . Spin the clutch by hand with spark plugs out to check where gears are touching , if ok turn on ign (with plugs out ) and spin by hand to see if relay or wiring is an issue
Good Luck

Is the return spring replaceable? Ah, just checked the fiche and I see that it is... Might have to try that if everything else checks out.

Definitely the return spring. Anybody know if you can get one at a hardware store? I see they are like $4, but $10 to ship from a dealer. I would also like to get one today instead of the 5 day wait for the warehouse to ship to a dealer which still isn't that local.
It appears the spring is deformed or broke near the end and slips outside of its retainer. With no tension the gear can vibrate over and engage the starting ring. I tried to "reform" the spring and it seems ok right now but it should be replaced. Re-bending the spring is about as easy as rewinding a recoil, ha.
Worst case is I duct tape it out of the way and pull start for the weekend. At least I know what it is so I won't damage anything.
