Hi Everyone,

I was lucky enough to find a really nice looking 86 with about 5600 miles on it. It starts up on the second pull and idles perfectly. However, it pours white smoke from the exhaust.

So far I have drained the gas and put fresh gas in, and this seems to have helped a little bit, but not sure if the problem is solved. Thinking of cleaning the carbs, but nervous about doing it for the first time.

Has anyone ever heard of seafoam fuel additive? Can anyone recommend for or against it?

Thanks,

Bobby

If the sled was summerized properly it is normal of some white smoke coming out. Usually I use fogging oil and it does smoke a bit.

What is the history on the sled....? Any idea if any maintenance was done to it...?

Hey Nick,

Thanks for the reply. When i spoke to the owner on the phone the story was that he "just had the sled maintained" However after purchasing it he mentioned that he didn't know when it was serviced last. It does have a brand new track, but other than that I am not sure when the carbs were cleaned last.

Did you try running the sled or where you afraid to damage something because of the smoke, make sure it has oil on the bottle or better yet mix some with your gas in the tank and run it, see how it feel and runs, also make sure nothing build a nest on the muffler or pipe.....

Do a search on carb cleaning on the site, I will find a ton of info....

Only ran it a bit, don't have enough snow here right now. Seemed to be a little boggy.....definitely had some critters in there but I got the stuff out. Ever hear of that seafoam stuff?

I am hoping that a good wide open run will help to clear it out

I'm sure the carbs are not really clean. I never used seafoam but I think is kind of like the fogging oil I was talking about....
Remember you don't need snow to run that baby, just a nice cold day. ;)!

And do some searches here on phazer, maintenance, carbs. But be carefull it gets to be pretty adictive ;)!

Good luck and let us know how it goes....

Dont be afraid to clean the carbs , once you do using this tech site , You will be amazed , its easy and very important , going wide open in a field or lake will not fix this problem. Take your time and clean carbs 1st .

I went step by step following the tech page on totallyamaha.com in Carb cleaning, Ive never done it before , I took my time and it went fine . I was so confident I went and cleaned the carbs on my Exciter sx and It was a real bear getting in there to remove the carbs without removing the air box but the rubber flanges moved enough to get them out . One thing to note is on the exciter and I think the phazer there is no round plastic ring around the main jet . at least not on my exciter 2 sx .
When you loosen the choke and throttle cable , you only need to crack the nut and screw the linkage backwards , then when putting it back screw the linkage down until within 1 thread then , tighten the nut. there your back where you need to be .
