I noticed while riding at lower elevation (<1000m) that at 3/4 to WOT my viper revs at 9000-9100. I never pushed it too hard at these elevations when i found this. I talked to the previous owner who did all his own work on it. He said it is clutched to run at 8700 at the higher mountains where it typically ride as well. Sure enough, at the peaks it did rev at 8700 at WOT.

The motor is stock except for Bender pipes. Is 8700 too high, i am felling it is set for a bit too high elevation because it is not until i am at the highest peaks that it seems to rev below 9000.

you gotta have it set up for 1 elevation or another. There is no compromise. Watch the jetting down low because with high elevation jetting you will easily blow it up at low elevation.

i want it setup for the higher elevations, but i think its over revving just a bit too much and doesn't settle down until i am at the highest of the mountains around here. Will the rivets people mention bring it down slightly?

RE the jetting, i have checked the plugs at different times of different rides and they have always been card board or darker. But my oil usage seems way to low. Would i not be more rich as i come down in elevation?

you would not become richer as you go down in elevation, cause the air is more dense, the closer you become to sea level. at higher elevations, the air is less dense, thus the reason for smaller jets.

sea level = fatter jets
higher elevation = smaller jets

you should reduce your main jets 1 size for every 3000 ft of elevation increase....vise versa for elevation decrease.

I think he just miss printed that,
you need to LEAN the jet as you INCREASE ALTITUDE
you needt to fatten the jet as you DECREASE ALTITUDE
