I have a 94 VMAX 600. How do I inspect the ramp shoes in the secondary? Do I have to remove it? take it apart? Or are they visible on the sled by separating the secondary halves?

Yeah, you'll need to pull the secondary off. You should be able to provide a visual inspection to see if any of the three have broken without taking the secondary apart. To really get a good look, you'll want to take apart the secondary and inspect the surface that slides on the helix ramp angle. It has been a while since I have had to buy them, but I do recall buying the aftermarket were much cheaper and held up just as good...that was just my experience back in the day. If it were me, I'd take apart the secondary and get a good look at the slider shoes and I always look at the ramps too to make sure they are smooth if not polished.

On a side note, if you need any parts or anything, I have a 94 vmax 600 that I may end up parting out. I have an assortment of helixes, a set of bender pipes, etc.

I think all you need to take apart the secondary is just a ratchet/socket to remove it from the jackshaft and then a pair of snap ring pliers...no pullers needed on the secondary. You remove that snap ring (there may be a washer there too) and the spring will pop the helix off. Make sure you kind of have your hand over it with some pressure so it doesn't go flying off when you remove the snap ring. Everyone has their own little approach when it comes to hold the secondary and removing the helix, putting it back on, etc. If you have a second set of hands, that will make it very easy. I have 3 girls so i have to get creative sometimes when I could really use that second set of hands....especially when working with rear suspensions.

Thanks a lot! I bought some new ramp shoes assuming they will need to be replaced. So I will be tearing into it Saturday. We had a big trip planned up north to Onaway, MI this weekend, But the snow has all melted :o| . So now I guess I have more time to do the work. Thanks again!
